Just look at the departure vs the arrival time. Assume 65 mph without stops. Each stop takes around 20 minutes. It it leaves the station heading north and averages 48 mph between point A and point B, how many stops did you make?

google maps is pretty good about estimating train time versus car time, assuming its close to accurate. Based on google it adds about an hour and a half one way.

That might be worth it to me not to hassle with parking or congested traffic.

Yeah, flights are almost as cheap as trains in that corridor. I fly and train in that stretch consistently. For me, NY to DC is almost the same drive as training it on the Northeast Regional train. I will say, though, that traffic from NYC to Boston is always bad (even overnight most times), so a train is better there.

For me, depending on the timing, I would look at flights from DC to NY...they may not be far off from the train cost and you get there faster.

If you drive, that opens up Baltimore and Philadelphia for a stop. If you were interested in that.

Yep, Penn Station is NYC.

Overnight parking is a tough one. There are lots...and they get cheaper as you head West towards the river. "Reasonable" is all relative, though. Personally, depending on the day and duration of your stay, you can park safely for free (but you would need to take the subway back to where your family is).

Just fly. It's quicker and not much more expensive than a train. It's too bad that trains are so poorly managed because they would be a great way to travel but it's hardly worth it.

The MIF's youngest daughter did a paper in high school about the gypsy holocaust during WWII, we talked about it some while she was researching it and writing her paper, she asked me help her get started on the paper and I suggested as an opening sentence something along the lines of "When most people think of the Holocaust, they think of the millions of jews that were killed by the Nazis. However, many other groups were also murdered by the Nazis during the Holocaust, particularly the gypsies, but most people are unaware of this. So in a sense, you could say that the gypsies got gypped." She didn't use that, but we still laugh about it...

heh...yes, at the time there was one - Paducah Tihlman, and then 4 smaller county schools in the surrounding area. It didn't even register with me they excluded the public schools
