I suspect most American Indians would disagree with that assessment. Many Hawaiians too. And Mexico certainly wasn't happy about having to give up Texas and most of California to a non-empire building nation...

Did we "tax" the American Indian as a subject of our empire? Or did we give them citizenship and let them build casinos (tax free) on land we "reserved" for their nation, turning many of them into multi-millionaires? You think the Pequots of Connecticut look at Foxwoods and hate on all this US-Empire crap?

As far as Hawaii goes, is that now a state? Are the native Hawaiians US citizens? Did we not just elect one of their own to be PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES for two consecutive terms? Or do we treat the natives like peasant people?

I think we need to sit down and really hammer out what the word "empire" means with respect to nation states. The United Kingdom had an empire (and they were proud of it) and the people who were subjects in that empire were better off staying in it. They no longer have that empire and the world is worse off for it. The USA? We never had an empire in any meaningful sense.

The Roman Empire was all "decline." It just took them 500 years (or so) to waste away.

The Republic of Rome on the other hand....
