an Old Fashioned is basically a Manhattan with the sugar, orange slice and bitters muddled together.

Cocktails, for the most part, are just variations on each other. Just like most of us here.

Finally, the liquor that I won't drink, even if free at an open bar:

Most Irish whiskey. It's no surprise that the Scots inferior cousins to the west produce an inferior spirit. Most Irish whiskey tastes like cough syrup, which is fitting, I suppose, because most Irish men are sickly and have an irrepressible hack (maybe that's how they talk). Anyway. Horrible stuff.

What about ranch dressing with wings?

FWIW, about the only liquor I drink is scotch, no ice and a tiny splash of water to release the flavors. I do enjoy marguritas when in Mexico...

I know a lot of scotch snobs who swear by it, but I think the extra water to release flavors is hooey. Scotch is already is primarily water. The thought that an extra drop or two of water in the glass makes it more flavorful is silly. To me anyway. I've tried it both ways. Many times. I can't tell a difference unless you put enough water in it to dilute it, then it just loses its bite.

I just was at my tailor today getting a new suit done and while I did my thing he brought me a single malt and a water on the side. I almost followed AA's advice, but I decided to pour a just bit in my glass. I figure if it's just a placebo effect, so be it.

Amen to all counts. Grey Goose is my choice.

Can you tell the difference between Goose and OJ vs Pinnacle and OJ? Most people can't.

I was at the Huntington Beach Pier yesterday at a Mexican place (called Fred's of all places) celebrating Cinco De Mayo.

So we're doing the Scotch Whiskey Heritage Centre tour in Edinburgh (a couple of blocks down from the castle) when the tour guide guy asked in an offhand way if anybody knew about the process for making Jack Daniels whiskey. So my hand instinctively shoots up, and after giving my bona fides as a Tennessean who knows his way around the distillery, I sorta became the defacto tour guide guy. People were actually touching me like I was the Pope.

It has been like 6+months since I have had a drink so I probably could tell the difference between Grey Goose and Dark Eyes or some shit.

However after a couple, it doesn't really matter what type of vodka once the buzz hits.

Most people have trouble telling the difference with vodka when it's mixed with anything (especially OJ). Several years back, I filled a Goose bottle with Pinnacle and fooled a number of premium vodka drinkers.

Try a blind taste test. Have someone mix a few Goose and OJs, maybe a Skyy and OJ, and a Pinnacle and OJ. See how it goes.

I put enough water in my scotch to bring it down from 80 proof to about 78 proof. Perhaps it's just psychological, but I enjoy it more that way. It never occurred to me to add water (and of course I'd never add enough to truly dilute the flavor), but I had a pretty high dollar bottle of single malt (Balvenie, IIRC) that came with a little information booklet which suggested adding a few drops of water, covering the top of your glass with the palm of your hand and giving it a good shake. I think I did that a few times (the shake thing, but have since quit doing that), but I still add the water...

I do have a bottle of some 110 proof (or thereabouts) scotch, I can't drink that without adding water...
