better than expected. I found myself impressed after a while...and he saved his status from falling to full Kentucky nerd-dom by rattling off the improv at the end.

I got tickets to see Eddie Izzard in a couple of weeks.
Its been awhile since I've seen a comedian in concert - a real concert and not some comedy club. I guess Eddie Murphy was the last

Yeah. The Dr. Phil stuff and whatnot. It was actually disappointing. It was in a beautiful, historic theater (The Alabama Theater), but the sound system was shit. I didn't hear half of it.
The bar was also disappointing. Asked for bourbon and given Jack. And it was a one ounce pour. Not even 1.25.

I could have got floor seats for Izzard but I took front row balcony seats instead.
The balcony has more fun I think

Is Jack Daniels not considered bourbon (if that's what you were referring to when you said Jack)? I thought it was listed as Tennessee sour maish whiskey, which I call bourbon. Of course, my parents and their age friends refer to any liquor at all as whiskey...
I've been listening to the raw comedy channel on XM. Good stuff...

They don't market it as bourbon but it meets all the requirements.

JD is not bourbon. While its components are similar to bourbon, the filtration process they use robs the very heart and soul from it and makes it into something different.

And the fine folks at JD will tell you themselves that its not bourbon.
That said, I am okay with JD, the way I am okay with Curry Sark or Dewer's. It's fine when free (wedding, any place with an open bar, friend's house), but if I have to purchase a brown liquor, it's not even a consideration usually.

I agree that it changes it, but theoretically some bourbon maker could add the same pre-aging filtration process JD undergoes to their bourbon and it wouldn't be a problem selling it as bourbon except to tens of people like you.

There is no doubt that it changes it. It removes a host of compounds and esters that give Bourbon a distinctive flavor. While, legally, because of a raw ingredient similarity, they may be able to call something that goes through extensive charcoal filtration "bourbon" I would no more consider it the same (regardless of how it was marketed) than I would consider Crown a type of Scotch.

So what is the definition of bourbon? I know JD and George Dickel are listed as Tennessee whiskeys, as opposed to the more common Kentucky whiskey, and I know JD at least has something about charcoal filtering, but I've never been able to tell much difference b/w JD and any other whiskey (I mean american whiskey, of course). In fairness, though, I don't drink much American whiskey...

If you can't tell a diff, Hedge, then it doesn't really matter. Drink Seagram's 7 with your root beer and bitters and be happy. It gets the job done.

The main reason it doesn't matter is b/c I rarely drink bourbon. But I am open to suggestions on what would be the bourbon of choice in, say, an Old Fashioned...
