"My son's tuxedo rental costs more than I spent on a tux rental, prom tickets, dinner for 2 and alcohol combined in 1983."

Well, that was 32 years ago. I'm sure the inflation in the price of a tux has exceeded the cost of Denny's and a case of PBR by now.

well being country bumpkins, we really didn't know any better - there was a steakhouse called the pines that charged like $22 for a sirloin and we thought we were living large. Then again, to pay for the sirloin I had to work 8 hours at the pizza joint.

nowadays they have this after prom stuff that kids go to.

I would have laughed at the idea of someone having a place to go after prom that wasn't a hotel room or the backseat of my car but kids today want to do it.

The expensive shit comes when they get married.

Just got back from Franklin TN after our youngest son's wedding. The rehearsal dinner set me back 6k at Vanderbilt Legends (golf for the groomsmen was another 800+). I got off light; the bride's father spent 50k for an outdoor wedding at a Civil War plantation.

I know someone who put ipecac in chili because some kept stealing lunches. I've heard of Ex-Lax brownie, too.

weddings and funerals--geesh

17k funeral including park bench purchase , buying the land the bench sits on, 4 hours to rent a room, whatever preparation fees there are, to cremate my dad--cremated and his cremations put in some frigging park bench looking over some water

casket rental for viewing was like 1500 for 3 hours of usage

all my dad wanted was to be put in a glad bag for Thursday afternoon pickup

mom and sisters did otherwise

Just make peace with it, if you can. Funerals are never for the dead. They're always for the living.

Agreed. I had a friend die very unexpectedly last week and, as often does in these situations, the conversation with my wife turned to what we'd want done if we died young. I told my wife that I really don't care for the most part since I'll be dead and not participating. She'd need to do whatever she thought was best for her and the kids. If that meant a public wake where they have to stand in front and grieve (or celebrate) in public, that's fine (though I can't imagine anyone really wants to do that). All I asked is that she not shit on my memory by having a funeral in a church and letting a fucking priest get up and lie about what a faithful guy I was and how I'm now in a better place. If it's possible for a dead person to get furious, that would do it for me.

I don't mind 5the funeral

its the amount of money/the markup/the exploitation of a grieving family

wow 50K for a wedding. I will never go into debt just for a wedding or funeral. 5 figures for a 1 day deal just blows me away

I mind the funeral very much. I don't begrudge anyone doing what is right for them so it's not like I refuse to go to a church service or anything. But, I can tell you that if my wife and kids died and it was just me left to plan the memorial, there is zero chance we'd be stepping foot in a church.

funerals with some reference to hope for the future allow grieving to progress.

I know my father is not suffering anymore--if my immediate family felt better giving him a catholic sendoff more power to them

I want to be cremated...basically because I feel my body is just the vehicle but who I AM is simply the driver and I won't be in the ground. Also, I don't want my kids to have the burden of feeling they need to visit a gravesite for me or maintain it. I sure as shit won't be hanging out at my gravesite. If I have any ability to be anywhere after I pass it will be at a Thanksgiving dinner table with a whole bunch of my family talking shit, eating, drinking and reminiscing. I love that now and I suspect I would show up for that if I had the chance in the "afterlife."

My wife will have me buried, though, if I go first. So, I give up on that. Like crash and AA said, if it helps who's left, then have at it.

Yeah, 31 years ago I got married in a church and the reception was downstairs in the basement. Cake, nuts, and punch. I think my father in law was out 200 bucks max, cheap bastard heh. He drank more than that at the rehearsal dinner and wedding this weekend.

I won't spend more than $10K on my daughters wedding.

I'm weird on dying - I just want to be dropped into the box - no embalming or nothing - but I know that won't happen
