How much money are we talking about here? $100 or $1000?

LMAO.

You can find cheap pizza in NYC (and also overpay for it, too). Ironically, the most expensive pizza I've bought ever was in Orlando when I had a pie delivered to the resort. It was a pizza shop off the property but they were charging Disney prices.

Yeah, my money would go a lot longer if I didn't live in NYC...but if I moved from here I would be divorced. At that point, the extra money is moot.

I'm pretty close to becoming a cord cutter now.

Kodi, IPTV and $100 a year for VPN and 800 channels including all the PPV is just too easy to pass on.

I'm not even sure I'm going to get the subscription.

I wrote a program that checks whether the IPTV urls are valid or not that I find from various sources on the internet ,builds a new file from them and then loads it to a central URL for Kodi, so at any given time I have 300-400 channels - like at least 100 of them are local stations from around the United States - and it doesn't cost anything.

I doubt the average American knows much about this yet, or for that matter, the average cord cutter, but within the next 5 years, everyone is going to be getting video thru IPTV. My router already has IPTV settings built into it.
And no one is going to be willing to pay cable TV prices for it.

Unfortunately that means the current business model for ESPN , Direct TV and the like is going to tank.

once I figure this thing out, I'll make the file available to you guys if you want and I'll tell you how to set it up.

It won't be HBO or PPV but its pretty close to a basic cable package plus 100 or so local TV stations.

Can you run it through Xbox One? What about Roku or D-Link? I have all of those right now. I'd be happy to drop cable but need to get the right equipment to run the alternatives.

also, Direct TV just released a streaming app that gives you 100 streaming channels for $35, and HBO/Starz for $5 - but that is per month ( of course that's 100% legal too)

the freebie channel list is a little harder to maintain but I think if I get connected with the right message board where people are constantly putting up links, with that program I wrote (benefit of working at a software company) I think I can get close to what these guys offer.

The PPV stuff is always listed out on Reddit, but the links are usually just streaming for as long as the event, then shut down before they can get traced.

The problem is the free stuff is volatile (and the subscription stuff can be) so its never going to be a 'channel 5 is HBO" kinda thing. The file will constantly be updated and one week you might have 300 channels and the next week 400.

I haven't touched on the international aspect of either. Some of these subscription channels offer you more than 1000 international channels so if you are a soccer nut, its nirvana

International is what drives this market as there is no DMCA law enforcement outside the U.S.

I'm just learning how all this works for now so I'll get better at using it the more I screw with it.

Here is a link to a site that builds a playlist (list of channels for Kodi to read) that you can see is an example of what is out there. Kodi reads this list and creates a channel guide for you

http://www.onetechgenius.com/live

and another one

http://www.freeiptvlinks.net/

now imagine hundreds of websites, forums, etc of people creating these lists with these links starting up and shutting down daily. its frustrating to have to deal with the volatility of this but even more frustrating if you load up 1000 channels and 70% of them don't work. Each channel you select that doesn't work has to time out before you get control back of the app.

that's why I wrote the program to filter out all the bad links and keep me with a valid file daily. Every time I start up Kodi, it just loads that evenings daily file.

The next step will be to write a programs spider that goes around searching for playlists and builds the valid compilation file without me having to manually do it. I'm not sure how to do that yet.

you can't run Kodi on Roku but the company I listed above has a Roku channel.

At this point I think the best device to run Kodi on is an Amazon Fire Stick with Alexa for $40, or the full blown Amazon Fire box for $89, or an Android Streaming box for around $60

If anyone is interested in buying one I can talk about the differences - Fire is more powerful, faster , Android box is more versatile.

I bet I'm not the first one to do this on here, I'm just the first one to talk much about it.

The setup I have at my house is currently an Asus RT-N66R router. This is a router that is rock solid and very popular. You can buy them refurbished for about $60.

This router has 2 USB ports on it (2.0, not 3.0).

So what I've done is attached a 2TB USB hard drive to one of the USB ports and its filled with movies (1,290) and TV series (77 complete) to date.

Now every wifi device in the house has access to that USB hard drive. So for each TV I have in the house, I have a device with Kodi

My living room TV is an Android TV so I installed Kodi directly to it, and for Christmas I gave my wife and the kids Amazon fire sticks. I also have a couple of those Android streaming boxes - one is out in the workshop.

So then you setup up an FTP server on the router to provide access to your hard drive (sounds hard, but its easy - its a wizard that walks you thru it built into the router) and then tell kodi to add movies from the FTP server.

Now every TV in the house has access to a single repository of movies, tv series, (porn - 200 hours of it at last count but I only set that up for the bedroom kodi...oh and the workshop...), music, etc., Since the porn doesn't have any IMDB info to provide posters and summaries for the thumbnails, I set it up like a TV series so I have Adult Season 1, 2, etc., Right now I"m on Adult Season 13. You have to write a .nfo file for each "episode" so its takes a bit of effort.

Then, you throw in that IPTV stuff I've been talking about on Kodi with hundreds of channels. Its more than you'll ever need.

in the last week or so, 5 guys in the office have gone out and done the same setup - one of them is a web developer so I'm expecting help on the coding.

so here is the cost breakdown if you want this kind of setup

Wireless Router with usb port -$60

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6833320154
2TB USB External Hard Drive - $79

Amazon Fire Stick - $40

Kodi is free software.
https://kodi.tv/download/

what is that - equivalent to one month of the cable bill?

of course if you need high speed internet, that's a given

All that's gonna happen is AT&T and Comcast are just gonna charge three times as much for Internet.

I saw where AT&T is trying to buy Time Warner

Actually I'm hoping that as net neutrality tanks and Comcast, TWC or whoever start jacking with subscribers, it motivates Google and others to push for 1gb internet to compete with them.

ESPN is going to be the biggest victim in all this. Their model for revenue is highly dependent on cable company fees.

I pay 109 month for 320cable channels
hbo is 10 extra which my kids use the signin codes also in colo and cali

99 year for amazon prime I uses amazon fire with

11.99 for nextflix that covers a kid in cali and one in boulder also

that's 1500 a year --add on the rentals for the boxes and all the taxes/fees and that 109 turns into 150 real quick however

and you are doing it all for a startup fee of 200 or so --how much time do you put into updating everymonth and how happy are you to stream everything 24/7--im not a big fan of relying on streaming services everywhere in my house

last but not least--porn in the workshop? wtf you do with your power tools?
