This was a tool used by the left to suppress critical political speech. Twas never used by the right.
The fairness doctrine has been used by various administrations to harass political opponents on the radio. Bill Ruder, Assistant Secretary of Commerce in the Kennedy administration, acknowledged that "Our massive strategy [in the early 1960s] was to use the Fairness Doctrine to challenge and harass right-wing broadcasters and hope that the challenges would be so costly to them that they would be inhibited and decide it was too expensive to continue."[24] Former Kennedy FCC staffer Martin Firestone wrote a memo to the Democratic National Committee on strategies to combat small rural radio stations unfriendly to Democrats:
Ending it, gave birth to Rush Limbaugh
The 1987 repeal of the fairness doctrine enabled the rise of talk radio that has been described as "unfiltered" divisive and/or vicious: "In 1988, a savvy former ABC Radio executive named Ed McLaughlin signed Rush Limbaugh — then working at a little-known Sacramento station — to a nationwide syndication contract. McLaughlin offered Limbaugh to stations at an unbeatable price: free. All they had to do to carry his program was to set aside four minutes per hour for ads that McLaughlin's company sold to national sponsors. The stations got to sell the remaining commercial time to local advertisers." According to The Washington Post, "From his earliest days on the air, Limbaugh trafficked in conspiracy theories, divisiveness, even viciousness" (e.g., "feminazis").[44] Prior to 1987 people using much less controversial verbiage had been taken off the air as obvious violations of the fairness doctrine.[45]
Democrat Party quietly, wants to bring it back

“Ending it, gave birth to Rush Limbaugh“

Was it good or bad? Make up your mind.

I am 100% in favor of bringing the fairness doctrine back

and while we are at it, make it illegal for media to receive paid advertising during newscasts.

lets kill fox, cnn, msnbc, bloomberg and everyone else who sells entertainment disguised as news.

Looks like Bolsonaro is going to step down albeit without admitting he lost. This whole thing where the right teeters on launching a coup anytime they lose an election (or actually moving forward with it in Trump’s case) is disturbing, for any sane person at least.

Right, J. Edgar Hoover (and therefor the entire FBI) never spied, hounded, kept extensive dossiers on and jailed (probably killed plenty too) anybody he deemed an enemy of the state. Never happened...

Well, that's one way to achieve energy independence...

Soaring power production from households and businesses with rooftop solar panels has sent records tumbling across Australia as output from fossil fuels falls to all-time lows.

In events described as unprecedented, demand for electricity from the grid plummeted to record lows in Queensland, Victoria, South Australia and Western Australia during the past two months.

The record so-called minimum operational demand excludes the power generated by consumers with their own solar panels, which met 92 per cent of South Australia's overall needs at one point on October 17.

We’ll get there soon. It’s not like we have big oil corporations sabotaging other energy industries or anything.

The "Right" (Reagan Administration) did everything in their power, to end it. And he did. All Reagan saw with the Fairness Doctrine was more of the authoritative crap from LBJ's Great Society that he sought to end to truly give us a Great Society.

You mean like letting the colored's vote? Yeah, that's exactly what you meant and still believe. We already know how you feel about women being allowed to vote. You're a fucked up motherfucker, you know that?

Of course black men should be able to vote. Women are emotional. They get pissed off at you if they think you are trying to "logic them." Anyone who makes life and death decisions based on emotions/feelings and not logic/facts should not have the right to vote.

When women didn't have the vote, we had tiny government, virtually no welfare state, and balanced budgets.
