She had hooked up with her future husband by then and he basically lived with us too. Both of them ended up buying houses with their fiances about a year before they actually got married. I guess grandkids are next...
I wouldn't mind having him around paying me rent, honestly. It's just I'm not sure it's the best thing for him. His siblings couldn't wait to get out of the house because their mother was always in their shit. His hatred for work is far more than the irritation of an overbearing mother. And that's what concerns me.

mine is one of them

I'm reaching the end of my benevolence on the matter
My youngest kid is a junior business major in a local college and the least ambitious of my three. He has an aversion to work and tried to weasel out of getting a summer job until July when I figured his game and made him go to work. When he graduates, he will most likely not be assertive enough to get employment. Since he is the only kid left, he has the whole finished basement to himself that has a kitchen, bathroom, a separate bedroom, big screen tv, etc. I told my wife, if he is still hanging around after graduation, i'm charging him $1,000 a month. She thought that was too much, but with him getting utilities, laundry, wi-fi, food, car insurance, phone bill, etc. it seems reasonable to me. Wife thinks it should only be $300 because mom's somehow have soft spots for their sons. Even if he works 40 hours at fast food, he can make $1,000 a month easily.
my daughter is free to return home from college and live with my wife and I, rent free until my death

"His siblings couldn't wait to get out of the house because their mother was always in their shit."

I think that was the motivating factor for ours too. Not that we were really in their shit, the youngest frequently smoked pot in her room, the MIF griped about it a little but didn't really get into her shit about it. The oldest never came home after college, just got a job and a place to live in Durham and then moved to New Bern, and the youngest left as soon as she got her master's and got a job. They were both on the marriage track very early, which is kinda old school. That's why traditionally the bride's parents pay for the wedding, b/c after that, she's all yours, buddy, don't ask us for anything. Of course it doesn't work like that these days, most of the girls work fulltime now too, but still, once you get married you're on your own...

I'm sure she's already plotting, er, planning to move back soon.

Grandpa Hedge!

When Mrs. DS and I bought a house and moved in together prior to getting married (but while engaged), I didn't know how to break it to my parents who still wanted us to sleep in separate beds when at their home and cringed when we didn't. So, we were all going to dinner together one Saturday night, and while I was driving, I asked, "Where are we doing Thanksgiving this year, your house or the home Mrs. DS (to be) and I just bought?"

You could have heard a pin drop due to the shock. Ha
