I agree that that certainly opened the door for the idea of a complete incompetent being seriously considered by a certain segment of the population as a possible choice for high office. I really thought, though, that she was so clearly not suited for that role that such a candidate would never be seriously considered again. But I forgot PT Barnum's statement that "no one has ever gone broke by underestimating the intelligence of the American people"...

Romney was part of the GOP elite that the masses did not want.

He had no shot to win , he'd do what Liz Cheney is doing now - begging Democrats to vote for him in return for progressive policies.

Phineus T Barnum was a congressman, and an abolitionist. He may have been a trickster and a scam artist when it came to running the circus, but he hated slavery and hated the South almost as much. He came into power just in time to vote for the 13th Amendment to the Constitution. That said, he was correct when he said no one has ever gone broke by underestimating the intelligence of the American people. That statement was a true today as it was then. Seceding from the Union, that was NOT an intelligent thing for the South to do in 1861.

I think it is safe to say that no one could have beaten Obama in 2012. He killed Osama Bin Laden in 2011, 99% of African Americans were voting (group identity) for the man. He was going to be re-elected. The end. If Romney had won the nomination in 2016, he might have beaten Clinton and (if he had) he WOULD have been re-elected in 2020.
