I don't think he's hirable right now. Few ADs want to deal with his attitude. He's not good with the press, the fans, and his bosses.

If he gets a HC gig, I think it will be a MAC or CUSA team or whatever.

AlabamAlum wrote:Well, 7 SEC games many of those years. I still think it was just as hard. Most of all teams in what is now considered the "Power 5" were the "haves" and they could load for bear (literally and figuratively). So, while I concede the Middle Tennessee's of the world weren't a factor early in Bryant's career, the "haves" were. And considering what Bryant had to go through with changes to the game - from single platoon to the changes to aid the passing game - he still won.

Also, remember that his last three championships happened after scholarship limits started. He evolved and succeeded with whatever changes he faced.

Edge, Bryant. Two or three more championships and Saban will arguably have the edge. But it won't be a slam dunk even then. The kind of three decade success Bryant had is really incredible.
By "haves" I meant the Bamas, LSUs, etc. Bryant could hoard the talent which made it harder for a Miss State rise up to challenge within the conference. Bryant was a great adjuster, he got in the wishbone when it was kicking ass, but evolved away from it before it became passe.

Bryant was in the years of 10 and 11 game regular seasons with a bowl game, where you had to go unbeaten or maybe one loss to win it all. Saban has a 12 game regular season, a CCG, and a bowl game (or from here forward - 2 bowl games) where you still have to go unbeaten or maybe one loss to win it all. Edge Saban.

What a nice dilemna for Bammer fans to wrangle over.

I knew what you meant. And Miss State isn't more of a threat now than they were then, really. Most of the 70's were played with scholarship limits, which was Bryant's best decade. And before that, Bryant won at Kentucky.

Edge, Bryant.

About the Iron Bowl... WTF was that PAC 12 BS?? 99 points?? Almost 1200 yards of offense? 3 effin interceptions by the winning qb?? I'm much more accustomed to 12 and 10 throwing about 5 in a season not 3 in a game. But I will say this; Kiffeninenin has done excellent things with our offense. It is light years ahead of last season. Do we embrace the improvements and hope we don't screw the pooch with mistakes? That seems to be the wave of the current and future in college football... see Oregon...see FSU this season... etc... after all, defense wins championships, offense put asses in the seats. Does Alabama need more asses in the seats? I think there are plenty of asses at most college football games, including Tuscaloosa.

And 2... count 'em TWO wide receivers in the game over 200 yards... We'll see both Cooper and Coats playing on Sunday's soon.

AU has now screwed the pooch and fired Ellis Johnson... his defenses at USCe were pretty good, and his DB's definitely outplayed Alabama's Saturday night. I sometimes think the lack of defensive production is a direct correlation to this hurry up offense stuff. Gus is an excellent offensive mind, but I wonder sometimes if his greatest talent is swinging his fist on the sideline and yelling "Boom"! I think Chizik has put a Bambino type curse on the Plainsmen. They will be good, they got close in '13, but will come up short and cause heartache and heartbreak. After all, he led AU out of the jungle of also-rans to their first MNC since 1957 and then was summarily fired after 1 poor season? Just like Ellis, makes no sense.

BTW... RooooolllllllLLLLLLLL TIDE!! RRROOOOOOOLLLLLLLL!!!

I've had the chance to see some excellent coaching era's during my 51 years of living... what coach Saban and his staff and teams are accomplishing now is difficult to fathom in this day of "parity". The parity was accomplished by the "haves" in the discussion because they could pull in the recruits just to keep from having to play against them. In Bryant's era, the mid majors were mostly relegated to basketball. Don't forget coach Stallings averaged 10 wins a season in his 7 years in Tuscaloosa. And some of the meanest defenses I've ever seen in college.

Just my .02, but coach Saban hasn't beaten out Coach at this point. But it's about as close as I've seen. And it feels great to be hated again because of the current not just the past.

I can't find the posts where AA predicted Bama would go 0-3 vs. LSU, MSU and Auburn, while I predicted they'd go 3-0...

I didn't really predict they'd go 0-3, I just didn't think they'd win all three.

But you won the bet.

You were right. A come-from-behind drive with 50 seconds left to force OT, a 5-point win, and one where Bama came from behind in the second half to win by 11; where we gave up 44 points and allowed 650 yards of offense.

But we won all three and I am ecstatic.
