Why did we need a fairness doctrine? Why? A fairness doctrine means no Rush Limbaugh. No Rush Limbaugh means no 1994 Contract with America and a Republican takeover of congress.

Our country would look very different than it does now with a fairness doctrine. Without it, anyone can go on the air and be as political as they want. People left of center do that very thing. With it, AM radio shows are about cake recipes and bullshit. No one listens, except for sports radio.

Trickle down was killed by immigration. That was killed with the 1990 immigration act when companies decided that PROFIT was more important than people. That was achieved with the infernal H1B Visa program. Corporations used to pay big bucks to train people on newer technologies. Hiring engineers and computer scientists, that was more of an IQ test than anything else. No more. 1990 changed everything. Now they focus solely on technical screening and just look for gurus in a specific technology and have that person try and train whoever is smart enough to understand what he is saying. But even then, India works very hard and protecting what they know and never sharing it. That was half of it.

The other half of the 1990 immigration act that ruined trickle down was the hollowing out of the crafts and trades. In 1988, a carpenter could make $23/hour to work on your house. And you paid it. After 1990, with the influx of immigrants from South of the Border (all of whom went to work for sub-contractors either legally or illegally) that reduced the market wage of carpentry down to $12 an hour. Same for electrical work, plumbing, masonry, all of it. Anything where you have sub-contracted work that follows a very strict set of construction guidelines, migrant labor destroyed its earning power by having a glut of labor available.

Simple as that.

You couldn't find 5 congressmen who could adequately explain to you what the fuck an "algorithm" even is, but I imagine hundreds are willing to let a lobbyist write law about it for them.

I can assure you, I know more about the 1990 immigration act (and what it did for IT as well as the trades) than you could possibly imagine. Let me put it another way, it did NOTHING for middle class America. It was put in place to help business. But the congressmen who crafted the bill, they basically wrote whatever the lobbyist groups told them to write.

Correct.

Fortunately, the GOP is going to cockblock anything and everything that the democrats propose here. So, although the only Republican who knows anything about algorithms might be mine (Schweikert) they are not going to go along with any bill created by the lobbyist.

The don't really write laws to regulate things anymore anyway. Instead, they spin up some bullshit "agency" that makes up rules as they go along. That is the only reason why the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau was created. Its a whole lot easier for an elected lawmaker to escape all accountability for creating a law that might hurt their own constituency, if they can just go back to their voters and say hey, I didn't regulate that. The CFPB did.

There really shouldn't BE any agencies with power to CREATE a regulation. The agency that is created, they should only ENFORCE a regulation that was voted upon as a bill and signed into law by a President. That is the way it supposed to work. But you are correct aTm, our legislators are fucking morons who lack the basic sophistication to have the slightest clue what to do when regulating.
