Indian Catholics can hold a grudge

hundreds of Catholic devotees and other curious residents flocked to the shrine in a nondescript Mumbai suburb to watch the hypnotic drip. Some even drank the droplets.

Edamaruku was challenged to investigate and so he went to the site with an engineer friend and traced the source of the drip backwards. Moisture on the wall the statue was mounted on seemed to come from an overflowing drain, which was in turn fed by a pipe that issued from a nearby toilet.

The "miracle" was simply bad plumbing, he said.

It was then that the situation turned ugly.

He presented his case in a febrile live television debate with representatives of Catholic lobby groups, while outside the studio a threatening crowd bearing sticks had gathered. He claims they were hired thugs.

For some Catholics the veracity of the miracle is no longer the point. Edamaruku, they say, insulted the Catholic church, by alleging the church manufactured the miracle to make money, by claiming the church was anti-science and even casting doubt over the miracle that ensured Mother Theresa's sainthood.

In the following weeks, three police stations in Mumbai took up blasphemy cases filed against him by Catholic groups under the notorious Section 295a of India's colonial-era penal code.

Section 295a was enacted in 1927 to curb hate speech in a restless colony bristling with religious and communal tensions. It makes "deliberate and malicious" speech insulting to religion punishable with up to three years in prison and a fine. However, some say it is frequently abused to suppress free speech.

"Under this law a policeman can simply arrest me even though there has been no investigation... they can just arrest me without a warrant and keep me in prison for a long timeā€¦ That risk I do not want to take," says Edamaruku.

He applied for anticipatory bail, which would prevent police taking him into custody before any investigation - but this was rejected. At the same time, he says, he was getting threatening phone calls from policemen proclaiming their intention to arrest him and telling him that unless he apologised the complaint would never be withdrawn.

Threatening comments were posted on an online forum, he says, and contacts in Mumbai told him they had heard talk of somebody being hired to beat him in jail. Catholic groups say they aren't behind any threats Mr Edamaruku may have received.

Went on a 8 day, 7 night cruise to the Eastern Caribbean, St. Thomas, Tortola and Nassau. Saw the actor Leon in the Atlantis casino as they were taking my money, (the bastages). Stayed one night Fort Lauderdale before flying back to New Orleans. Then had to drive the oldest son to Portland.

Except for the Dallas to Pueblo part, it really is a beautiful drive, especially going along the Columbia River in Oregon and the Snake River (including the Snake River canyon) in Wyoming.

didn't they build a road just for people to see the Columbia valley/river in Oregon?

I think I'm right on that.

My son's best friend , they've hung out since they were 3 years old was shipped off to Parris Island today to start his enlistment as a Marine.

He came over to say goodbye to me, my wife and my son. Before he left all 4 of us were crying. Not sure why but I've been in a funk since he left. I think its because I know the next time I see him, he won't be the kid I left my playboys out for in the basement or fed pizza rolls too every weekend for 3 years.

At the high school graduation, they asked all the seniors who were joining the military to stand up and the audience gave them a standing ovation.

No one clapped for the merit scholars.

America!

Thanks to that kid for his service. Yeah, we're in an era now where kids going into the military will come back changed, and not in the historically classic - disciplined, regimented, respectful - ways. I'm beginning to think that we would be better situated as a country if there was some sort of compulsory service for all children...like in Israel. If that was the case, I don't think we'd have these VA problems we have now. I also don't think the veteran unemployment rate would be what it is. I don't think we connect to the particulars of military service anymore as a country. We're worse off for it.

with an all volunteer service you are always going to get the "bottom of the barrel' so to speak as a rule. Im not saying that to be derogatory but the nature of the military these days--the higher educated don't want any part of it. your typical enlisted soldier is high school grad GED equivalent with limited other opportunities who joins the military either for the GI bill education or regular paycheck or to support a family.
The best soldiers are those who don't question orders often easily brainwashed by the services to go unflinching into situations that might be questionable to others
god bless every one of em.

on a related note here the consequences of being brain washed

parents ran into the water but the gator had him ,pulled him under and disappeared

Why do you have a beach with alligators swimming around?

I'm sure the size of any of your offspring even in utero would deter even the largest gator...

I don't think there was a lifeguard...I"m pretty sure there wasn't because it was a "No Swimming" beach (with signage). I'm guessing the No Swimming was because of the chance of alligators...and definitely if there were signs prohibiting swimming, there would be no lifeguards around.

Disney will still get the shit sued out of them.

seems like they have a few manmade beaches right on those lakes that did have lifeguards

I think at least one news source said a lifeguard was notified and attempted to retrieve the child. Maybe he/she wasn't in the immediate area - I don't know the details.

testimoney from a "ride expert" during the Freddie Gray trial is being tweeted.

I'm not really commenting on the need for the trial - clearly something bad happened with Freddie Gray

but this is comical its so bad--you gotta read it - its so bad I'm not questioning if this isn't made up
