Oh boy...
Philadelphia report says Eagles keen to hire Gruden
My gut says he is going back to coaching. But, it is in the NFL which basically all the rumours on the Internet are saying. Outside of a handful of orange colored Kool-Aid drinking radio BS artists who are increasing listeners to drive up ad revenue with their "insider" knowledge, nobody is saying he is comming to UT.
Gruden coaching in college makes no sense. His wife and her family are from Knoxville? He was a grad assistant here? He has ties here? Pleeeaaaasssssseeeee.... He has had multiple chances to come back here, whether it was because he wanted to or perhaps because of a large payday or a combo of the two, and he didn't jump. The guy is making money out the @ss at ESPN and now he is suddenly going to drop everything and coach at 'ol rocky top when he turned it down multiple times in the past? We have to many wishful thinkers surrounding the program whose thoughts were unfortunately allowed to make it onto the radio talk shows and Internet as "insider" info. I got some "insider" info for these people. Let me drop my pants, give you my underwear, and you'll my "insider" info in your hands!!
Besides, why do we want this guy so @#$% bad?! Has anyone taken a really good look at his record? It's not all that great. Yeah, Gruden won a superbowl during his first season at Tampa but with somebody elses players (Tony Dungy's). After that first season in Tampa, things went downhill bad and they didn't get much better except for a season or two. Tony had several good seasons in the NFL. Even at Tampa he had good seasons as I recall, he just couldn't push the team over the hump to get them to a superbowl. Looking at Gruden's record in Tampa, it was a miracle Gruden lasted there as long as he did. If by some miracle Gruden comes here, I suspect he'll do fine for a season or two assuming all the current, seasoned players stay. Once he has to recruit and coach players up, it will be all over.
I think I've said this before and will say it again: we may regret letting Dooley go (I didn't want him gone). He was soooo close to turning it around. 'bama was the only team that really whipped us (I'm throwing Vandy out, Bray and the offense gave up). In all the other games, we were in it to win it. If we had a defense (Sal is great AA!), we would have won most of our games. I believe I've also said this before and I'll say it again: if Wilcox had not left and we had last years defense, Dooley would still be here, we would have no fewer than 8 wins, and I fully believe we woud have at least 10 wins, perhaps even 11. That's what cost Dooley his job; Wilcox leaving combined with impatient rumour mongers with their "insider" knowledge.
I hope everyone is happy because I sure don't know who in their right mind is comming here to coach. Do you all think we'll be happy with Chaney as head coach? Perhaps Fulmer will come back. Oh wait... he's on the short list for KY. Oh darn.
We better hope we get someone good in here now who can coach and get things done. If not, I have bad feeling we will be on a 15-20 year slide of barely above 50% season records while being on a coaching carousel always looking for the guy who will [finally] lead us to the SEC Championship game.
