I knew he did a version before the Animals, but never have heard it before.

yea I've heard it a few times.
I remember watching a documentary awhile back on him.
Apparently he changed his music style in folk music and people were lining up to boo him off the stage at major concerts back in his prime. He'd just keep on playing whatever he wanted.

In fairness, that's probably one of the most covered songs ever...

I do like acoustic versions, they tend to come across as more mournful, but I love the Animals version, which exemplifies more pain than sadness...

Animals version is better, but I enjoyed Dylan's and I usually don't like his music.

Dylan's got some good stuff. He's also played with a lot of people, like Johnny Cash and Willie (and the Dead). I can see how some people might not like his much-parodied voice though, esp. when he's working the nasally version...

Doc and Richard Watson's cover of HotRS is the best imo.

Doc's covers of a lot of things are the best version...

Meanwhile, in Kingsland, Arkansas (birthplace of Johnny Cash)…
An image of Johnny Cash is painted on the side of the town’s water tower. This past week, someone shot a hole in Cash’s crotch, and now the singer pisses on the town all day long…

I saw The Hu recently. Mongolian metal band that did some work on a Star Wars game. Was not too impressed. Rock n roll is either dying or dead.
