It’s baffling to me why progressives ended up holding out just long enough to help torpedo Democrats’ chances in the Virginia governor’s race—and then acceded to this vote just days later. My only theory is that they feared being blamed for the loss (which explains why Jayapal started signaling the decision to back down on Monday), but couldn’t get the votes in before Friday.

I think its the same reason they weren't up in arms over Garland not getting to the supreme court. In that case they thought that Hillary would win and they could nominate another liberal to the court, and in this case they felt the country backed their progressive agenda just 12 months after Biden won a historic election

At the end of the day they always miscalculate one thing. The majority of Americans in this country see themselves as conservative. Those Americans do not want to be labeled a liberal and more importantly they do not support big government overreach. Yes, there are things they do support that fall into a liberal agenda but when it comes to a democratic candidate telling parents they have no right to decide what is being taught to their kids? You're going to lose the moderates. To then equate that to racism and you're going to energize them go to the polls.

America didn't vote for Biden, they voted against Trump, but America supports much of Trumps platform. Youngkin got 13% of the black vote in the Virginia race, yet the progessives first rallying cry was that America supports white supremacy.

The moralizing continues to hurt their connection , especially as Biden claimed to want reconciliation and unity.

Well, the right has been moralizing for centuries and no doubt won't stop anytime soon. Bottom line is, nobody likes it, irregardless of what side you're on. But don't act like the left has a corner on the moralizing market. We've been playing catchup in that department for a looooong time...

the liberals today would recoil at the idea that I'm allowed to have an idea that is different from theirs, that I should be allowed to have a platform for that idea at a college campus or on twitter, and worse, they are fully prepared to enact legislation when given the opportunity to stop it and in the mean time use the powers of the judicial branch to stop it.

in my day being a liberal meant you could count on them to fight against no beer sales on sunday or allow a strip club on the edge of town, today you can count on them to call everyone a racist , nazi or facist that doesn't abide by their worldview of enlightened superiority. A little bit of that goes a long way, they are knee deep into it and mainline America is over it. It only took 12 months to make moderates say no mas.

Actually you're wrong. Liberals are by definition, moderates in the middle who fight in small piecemeal increments to make sure things don't go too far to the right. It's the lefties that have done what you are asserting. Labor unions, socialists, communists, etc. Left wing radicals are the only reason we're not living in a feudal state, even though we will be soon enough because the war has been lost. Big money has won. And most people know nothing about it because this has been completely written out of our history. Check out Chris Hedges' "Death of the Liberal Class" for more info. You are wrong about absolutely everything. The democrat party was the party of slavery. That was the party of the South. The Ku Klux Klan were democrats. The republican party was (and is) the party of Lincoln and emancipation. It was a conservative principle that all men are created equal before God and all were deserving of freedom.
