I've avoided several speeding and open container tickets in Mexico by giving a $50 bill to the officer. Probably could've gotten by with a 20, but I'm big time...

yup

3rd world

hedge how do you handle auto insurance when you drive in Mexico? Wife and I paid $8 for one day's "coverage" for driving a Mini-van into a Mexican border town. We just parked it there but we were insured.

According to the Human Development Index, Mexico is roughly equivalent to Iran, Ukraine, Bosnia, and Peru.

We rent a car whenever we go, it's like $8 a day for the rental but then you have to buy insurance which is about $30 a day. Never had an issue...

a few auto insurance policies will cover the rental.

The rental company tries to scare you with gap coverage and other things that aren't covered by your insurance.

Also, I think some cards, like maybe Amex gold includes auto insurance when you rent a car with it. Don't hold me to that, I'm not certain which cards do

one perk with my job is we get to use our travel app to book personal travel and insurance is always covered in the price of the rental car along with satellite radio. Also we get pretty good deals on corporate hotel rates.

I booked a hotel for my daughter this weekend that was on hotels.com for $265 a night and our rate was $129. We don't have many perks, but that is one I use alot.

They tell me that their coverage is mandatory in Mexico and everywhere else we've ever been in the Caribbean and central America. I think they get some kind of kickback b/c like I said, the rental fees are always less than $10 a day. I don't know how they can even run the business on just that...

gas prices are $1 a gallon higher over this time last year

number of reported covid cases are 300% higher than this time last year - and that's with a vaccine. The health system is in danger of being overloaded and the Director of Infectious Disease just made a statement that suggests hospitals will soon need to make life saving decisions on covid/non covid or perhaps even vaccinated/non vaccinated Americans. Roe Vs Wade has a state blueprint to be marginalized, Voting rights are supposedly in jeopardy in a couple of key swing states (not that I personally care about either of those) and a failed state has just been turned loose on the world to support global terrorism again. Eviction moratoriums overturned, no stimulus package, platform infrastructure bill is being threatened by his own party.....

by any honest measurement, can Americans say they are better off 8 months into President Biden's presidency? His base has to be completely disillusioned with this man at the moment. He is the poster child of failed leadership.

And before you go with the "good, fuck the people that are not vaccinated, 60% of African Americans are not vaccinated, and the highest percentage of people not vaccinated are actually people with advanced degrees - who as you might want to believe, are not Trump supporters.

never rented a car in Mexico, matter of fact I've never rented a car outside the United States. I bet they don't want rental cars in America going to Mexico without good theft coverage though.

I bet somebody in the Tennessee contingent does but we haven't seen them in a while. Puter will no doubt repost the 9/11 thread on his board on Saturday, some of those guys generally stop by over there on 9/11 to comment, we should ask them on Saturday...

That's false...
The largest decrease in hesitancy between January and May by education group was in those with a high school education or less. Hesitancy held constant in the most educated group (those with a Ph.D.); by May Ph.D.’s were the most hesitant group. While vaccine hesitancy decreased across virtually all racial groups, Blacks and Pacific Islanders had the largest decreases, joining Hispanics and Asians at having lower vaccine hesitancy than whites in May.

Those from counties with higher Trump support in the 2020 presidential election showed higher hesitancy, and the difference in hesitancy between areas with high and low Trump support grew over the period studied. “This finding really highlights the politicization of public health recommendations,” said King.

You forgot to mention the taking down of the Robert E. Lee statue in Richmond. I'm sure that's more galling to a lot of folks than anything you mentioned...

If that counts as a win for Biden or a progressive platform, then its in worse shape than I thought.

No, I'm saying that's another thing on the list of things to complain about. For some (many), anyway. And certainly easily blamable on Biden...

I don't have a problem with confederate statues being taken down

I mean - its basically meaningless, no one really gives a statue any more thought nowadays than they do a park bench - but if I am African American, I don't want to see people who fought to enslave me being honored in a public square. Its history and shouldn't be blackwashed (heh, I crack myself up) but it can't be prominent in the makeup of a city.

Neither side should choose for that to be the issue they die on the hill for.

btw, fwiw, I'm fucking spooked about Covid now...again

I'm pretty much back to living a hermit life again. I go to the grocery and occasionally TSC or Home Depot - but I am in and out and socially distance between everyone.

I am helping out my mom who is 86 and my daughter is coming to town with 2 friends from school and wanted to stay here - which I am not going to take a chance of putting 3 college girls hanging out at school parties, sporting events whatever in the same house as my 86 year old mom who is on tap for a booster shot when they become available.

So I sprang for a hotel room for them on my dime. I'm going to meet them for lunch and I'm even worried about hanging out with them then. I've been wearing a mask around my mom now . I have no idea if a mask helps or not but I'm *not* going to be the person that gives my mom Covid.

She has a cleaner that comes once every 2 weeks to clean her place - doesn't wear a mask around her. Even her health nurse that visits once a week didn't wear a mask until 2 weeks ago.
