the reason the Afghan military collapsed is because it was an American sponsored jobs program, not a fighting force. They weren't going to fire a weapon against the Taliban - and honestly I'm not sure I blame them.

Collect the check and feed your family. Remember when the Iraqi military left a trail of uniforms on the road as they escaped after it was obvious Saddam wasn't in charge any more?

We all remember the story of the Afghani soldier who sold his M-16 into a "market" to get enough money to buy some goats to create a "dowry" for his daughter who was getting married. That type of behavior would never be tolerated in the United States. Its standard operating procedure in Afghanistan. But this is what is left of a nation of people who could not even identify where their nation is on a map BUT who understand Islam perfectly.

If you follow Christ fundamentally, you can do anything. The treasury secretary under the Bush 43 Administration, he was a Christian Scientist and former CEO of Goldman Sacks. There are countless examples of Christian fundamentalists who have adapted the lives (as best they could) to the secular Western culture, and thrived in it. Islam (if followed fundamentally) renders you a ignorant peasant. Its just that these particular peasants haven't found oil in the ground yet to make them rich the way the peasants in Saudi have.

This is normal human pan/epidemic behavior, btw. I laugh at all the “how can people be soooo dumb!” when this is like normal any time there is any medical fear like this. That’s why the response from the CDC is strong, instead of saying, “hmmm we’ll look into it,” they immediately issue propaganda denouncing it because they’re immediately assuming that quackery is going be coming out of the woodwork. The Taliban has mobilized a special unit, called Al Isha, to hunt down Afghans who helped US and allied forces — and it’s using US equipment and data to do it.
