It was a charity game for St. Jude’s, televised on ESPNU.

It kinda felt like a midseason game. Great crowd. Good win for us, esp. with college POY candidate (favorite) RJ Davis on the bench...

Kentucky shot 42 three's last night against Kentucky Wesleyan, only 1 shot behind the free throw line (meaning a jumper for 2).

fuck off Cal, win or lose I'm glad you're at Arkansas with that 1988 basketball

Maxwell was traded after the '85 season, and ML Carr retired after '85. Maxwell went to the Clippers and Walton came to Boston. Maxwell got his big (for the time) contract after the '84 season, and he came to camp out of shape (Bird claims this was the real reason), then battled injuries that season (Maxwell claims this as the real reason) and was never the same. McHale came on strong and went from being a sixth man to being a starter with a major scoring role, and Maxwell knew McHale was the starter for good at that point.

Maxwell's drop-off caused a lot of friction between him and Bird, and Bird talked about it pretty openly in at least one of his books. Maxwell has discussed it as well, and Maxwell claims the two finally connected over the phone during covid and had a long conversation clearing the air to bury the hatchet. Bird has made no such comment. Then again, Bird doesn't really talk to any press anymore absent it being for something like the museum in Terra Haute or if he's getting paid. Jackie MacMullan, Bob Ryan and Dan Shaughnessy all say that Bird will barely even respond to their calls, and he was tight / had a good rapporte with those three (to varying degrees), especially McMullan. So, who knows the real truth though though?

Plus, apart from Bird's rural pre-disposition to cut himself off from outsiders even more as he ages, Bird has had nothing to do with the Celtics franchise for nearly 30 years now because of the way prior ownership screwed him over during the mid-90's when Bird should have been named coach over that bastard Pitino. Bird signed on with the Pacers and has been loyal to the Pacers ever sense.

Side Note: Maxwell was from Kinston (the first of many -- relatively speaking -- NBA players from Kinston), and ML Carr was from Duplin County, which also borders Wayne and Lenoir counties. The early / mid 80's Lakers had three guys who played at Carolina (Worthy, McAdoo and Kupchak), and the Celtics had two local guys who didn't play at Carolina. So, the Eastern NC ABC'ers were even more predisposed to pull against the Lakers apart from the racial undercurrent.

I remember Pitino running that type of system before anyone else at the major D1 level. In a weird way, I'm glad it's back at UK. I also remember that system working wonderfully one March 1995 Saturday in Birmingham....
