I haven’t been vocal about the Pirates in almost 3 years. You also haven’t called me out until the Reds now all of a sudden have a better year than us. Neither of us is making the playoffs so there’s nothing to post.

I was at the Friday night’s 17-5 shitshow. Fan of the team, not a fan of the owner and management. Baseball is set up where owners don’t need to put butts in the seats to make a profit. That’s why you see attendance go down. It doesn’t matter to the owners that no one is coming.

Are you sure it doesn't have something to do with the players taking a knee during the national anthem? That's what everybody is blaming the decline in NFL attendance on, anyway...

Sardis is wrong on so many levels. Baseball need attendance to survive. Especially in a shithole town like Pittsburgh where football and hockey trump baseball.

The Pirates, in 2017, had revenue of $258M, of which $60M is from gate revenue including club seating. The rest comes from revenue sharing/TV etc. Their net income was $35M. For 2018, they cut their payroll by $17M. Attendance for 2018 is down 10%. Sounds like a lot, but that only represents $6M in revenue loss. Because their salary cut is more than gate loss, they will actually make more money by sucking more this year over last. Plus, add that each team owner will get $50M extra in 2018 from the sale of BAMTech to Disney, the Pirates' owner will make around $96M in net income in 2018. Since the Pirates are projected to make $96M in 2018, they could still make money without the $54M in gate revenue.
