I love Oliver, and not just because he is a massive Liverpool supporter. I don’t always agree with him — although I often do — but I always appreciate his point of view and attention to detail.

I really don't have a problem with removing confederate statues from wherever.
I don't like the idea of them being torn down and destroyed but they are museum pieces, not public displays of support and really should have been removed long ago
Its history, it should be recognized as such but to honor people publicly who fought in a losing effort to separate from the Union should not continue.
That said, had the South *won* the war, well, different story. To the victor goes the spoils.
I do not support taking down founding father statues and renaming entities named after them because they were slave owners.

probably true, we had more German immigrants in this country prior to WWII than any other nationality

IIRC, Germanic ancestry is still the largest ancestry in the United States.
Dad's family is solidly English with a smidgeon of Scots-Irish thrown into the mix.
My mother's family is a mix of Scots-Irish, English, French and supposedly there was a bi-racial woman that went for passing in the mix along with a Cherokee bride thrown in too.

I strongly dislike the current rhetoric, from both sides, but especially from the left, that assumes and encourages people to have some kind of white identity. I liked it better when the only people who thought of of themselves as "white" were the fringe white supremacists. I don't wanna be together with all you other white fucks. You Anglo, French, Irish, whatever other dickheads can go to hell.

Confederate statues belong in museums, not on display and not destroyed either. A museum is where they belong.
King David (of David and Goliath) was the Bible's number one sociopath. He took other men's wives from them. And he murdered people ruthlessly. 200 foreskins? For shame King David. His statue (in all its glory) stands in a museum in Northern Italy. That is where it belongs.
