That's exactly what they want you to think. They're playing 3D chess at the Grove, man...

What a thrilling life that must be. Reading the “other team’s” game program looking for trash talk like some nutcase Dook nerd, but instead of like, something fun like basketball, its politics and you’re carrying the water for one half of the criminals laughing at you.

I’m in SF about 7-10 times a year and I would say it is both nowhere near as bad as people think and also pretty grim in spots. Market St has become way better over the last year or so but around Union Square is not great. But not great is really not that big a deal, IMO. This last trip, I noticed way more of the real zombie severely addicted folks near my office in the Embarcadero which is a bit of a reversal. One of the people I was with stayed at a hotel on Market near the Warfield and it was really bad over there. That is an area I’d say is truly in trouble and possibly dangerous.

I travel a lot and all over the country and in my experience, most of the narrative about urban decay is overblown. It’s true in SF, too, but it’s closer to being true there than anywhere else except for maybe Portland.

So did you get laid off or something to end up posting back at this shithole?

No, it’s just part of my occasional wanderings across the internet and this time I saw my name mentioned. I don’t expect to get laid off but empty nest life is close and retirement (or significant slow down) is not that far away so maybe I’ll fill those free hours here. Just like I drew it up in all my dreams.

My first job when I moved to SF (thru a temp agency) was at the Embarcadero, for Kikkoman of soy sauce fame...

Market Street was never post card material to begin with. I used to ride my bike to work sometimes and I'd always see some of the dregs shuffling around even at 5 a.m., but I will admit that on my last visit (probably 7-8 years ago), we got up around 5 a.m. and walked up and down Market and it was way worse than I remembered. I suspect it's gotten even worse since then. Wouldn't really be near the top of my list as a tourist destination if I was visiting SF anyway, but now probably best to avoid altogether, unless one is looking to score...

I use Market St as an example because I’m often walking along it from our office to meetings when I’m town. When I started this business and ended up in SF a lot (late 2020), Market St near my office in the financial district was a bad scene. Further up by the Warfield, past Union Sq and near the Civic Center was always dicey and is now bad. But, that stuff pushed way down towards the Ferry Building in 2021 and early 2022 and has since receded.

I used to attend conferences in SF occasionally. Sometimes by myself, sometimes I brought the family. One time, going back about 15 years, at the recommendation of Stu, I moseyed down to the Mission St area for this Mexican food stand place. The food was good, but that area was pretty bad back then. Can’t imagine it now.

I think the Mission has probably been gentrified. Same with South of Market..

every U-of-A fan is rooting for eCat's team to take down Tennessee tomorrow. We have GOT to get that last #1 slot. Can't be a 2. Got to be a 1 and delay the Houston/UConn/Purdue matchup for as long as possible.
