Riding dirty Chapter One

"Michael I don't understand."

"Understand what ma?"

"Why? Why are you going on another cruise out of Miami to the exact same islands? You went on that cruise just months ago. Why are you doing this again?"

"Well ma, I'm going on three cruises. That is just the first one. But I have 3 of them lined up and its going to be great."

Michael Jones is unemployed. He is an unemployed, uneducated, 24 year old, fitness fanatic. He lives in the Boston area and has all his life. But he does have income. Three years ago Michael started driving for Uber just as a side gig. He started to pick up on patterns of when the times are the busiest. And in doing so, he found he could replace all his income as a fitness instructor (and then some) just with a willingness to drive a car near Logan Airport on 2nd shift time, 6 days a week. Business has been so successful that he found it very easy to squirrel away big dollars for Caribbean cruising out of Florida. But the cruising is quite incidental. Being on the ship affords Michael other opportunities that he will not be sharing with his mom.

"You didn't feel the need to let us know you were going again?"

Thoughtful look. Shaking his head. "No ma, I didn't. Its really not your business."

"Mike be reasonable. I think you are being.... short-sighted."

Here we go again.

"Look at all that money you are spending on cruising, that could be spent on college education."

"Ma, I can't pass classes. I'm dumb. I am a dumb boy, don't you get it? Everyone else is smarter that me. Paying tuition and going to college, that is just throwing money down the toilet. I tried college, it wasn't for me."

"You failed just two classes?

"Ma I failed English Composition." Totally exasperated. "I can't even speak English all that well, is it any surprise I can't write it? I am just not smaht."

"You are giving up too quick."

"Look I am very good at what I do." Mike is actually very proud of his physical condition. "I work out 1 hour a day, 6 days a week. And I follow a strict diet. Very strict as you well know. And I do make good money with the Uber."

"I just think you could be something far more successful than a taxi driver."

"You know who you sound like? You sound like Kathy now."

Kathy Shore was Mike's steady girlfriend all through high school and all of Kathy's college years. She didn't flunk out of school after her first semester. She graduated. And she was sorely disappointed in Michael calling it quits with his education. But he did get a job and he did take her out and treat her for four years so she hung in there as long as she could. But eventually she came to realize that Mike being a taxi driver was all he was going to be. That was not good enough for her. She dumped him 3 days after her college commencement.

Mike has never recovered. She left him and is now married to a smart guy, some IT whiz. He just can't get over it. Hard to just let go of the girl who takes your virginity. He felt used and abused, spent. But that is okay, he found a much better way to satisfy his libido.

2AM Thursday morning.

Three more runs, three more runs.

Mike just wanted to do three more very lucrative drives. 2 flights landed very late and he was sure he could get three complete fares out of them if he hustled. One was a drive up to Arlington, piece of cake. The second was down to Weymouth. That was a bit longer. And it was almost 3:30 AM before he got back for that final run, thought he would miss all the fares. There was one more, someone with a lot of suitcases.

"So are you moving to Newton?"

"Actually I am. Got a job with a start-up in Needham. Just a website really, discountcaribbean.com."

"Yes the cruise portal." Mike is smiling ear to ear. "I know it well."

"Really? That's good to hear. There are thousands of discount cruise portals on the interwebs. How did you hear about us?"

"I was googling around one day and it came up in my favorites as an ad. I just clicked on it. Got hooked. Get cruise at vastly reduced price but you get almost no time to prepare. I once booked a cruise and had just 6 days before it left."

"I believe that is the minimum now." His passenger was concentrating very deeply. "The international ports require at least 5 day notice to know who will be coming and when they will be coming. So there is a minimum 6 day turn-around time. But I am so happy to hear you use our site!"

"I just downloaded the app to my Android. I use that for my bookings now."

"That is the team that I will be working with, the App team. Do you know how that works?"

"Sure, just pick a embarkation date and a bid for a room. And if it gets accepted, I find out in 60 minutes which ship I am on and which port out of Florida."

"Exactly right. Talking to my boss, she tells me they can almost always find a cruise that is desperate to fill their last empty cabins if the date is getting close enough."

"It doesn't always work that way for me. I get maybe a 25% success rate. I'm not complaining, but it is what it is."

"Oh wow, you must bid low."

"That" Mike is really smiling now. "And I only travel alone. I need a single cabin. A lot of ships don't have that."

"You cruise alone? Wow. How is that?"

"FANTASTIC!!!!!"

How many chapters have you got? Or are you just doing this on the fly?

Okay I do have an outline so there is a well defined story, but the number of chapters is on the fly. Its on the fly because the depth of the character development and the dialogue, I am not sure how many chapters are required.

I'm on the edge of my seat...
