RE: Personal Attendance at UNC NCAA Hearing

VIA: Facsimile

Dear Commissioner Swofford:

While I don’t make a habit of writing complaint letters about sports matters, I was appalled to hear of your apparent personal attendance with the North Carolina delegation before the NCAA this date. Why, precisely, is it meet for you to personally attend the UNC hearing given you sent a subordinate to recent NCAA proceedings involving Georgia Tech and Florida State?

Coupled with your very noticeable lack of public comment on the worst case of cheating by a member institution in fifty years – a member institution of which you are the former athletic director and an athletic alumnus – this latest act of partiality further undermines your credibility to those (such as myself with NC State) associated with other ACC schools.

I’ve been told that you attended this meeting at the request of UNC. If so, that is immaterial. You are not the Commissioner of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. You are the Commissioner of the Atlantic Coast Conference. Your attendance at this meeting gave a clear impression of individual advocacy for your former employer that was manifestly inappropriate, especially coupled with your personal affiliations with UNC and your lack of such public advocacy on behalf of other member institutions facing NCAA issues.

I’m hoping that the athletic directors of the other conference institutions will speak out on this latest act of partiality by a conference leadership that, while charged with representing all member institutions without bias or prejudice, has a history of favoritism most recently demonstrated by the situation discussed here.

Cordially,

[Cal]

I bet only a few left when he told all non-unc fans to leave the room...

PERSON COUNTY (WTVD) -- The courtroom antics of a Person County judge are drawing criticism following his decision to give away tickets to a UNC game.

"To me, court is very serious," said Person County resident Ollie Jeffers.

Jeffers was shocked when the judge turned court time into fun time.

"He basically said 'all Carolina fans just stay seated and everybody else can take a recess,'" Jeffers recalled. "And he said, 'I have tickets I'm going to give away.'"

Jeffers says during a courtroom break, District Court Judge Mike Gentry held a lottery of sorts, eventually awarding the Carolina tickets to a defendant in a domestic violence case.

"The seriousness of it is violators are there for punishment, not to be awarded for wrongdoing," he added. "It bothered me to know we're giving away gifts to people who violate other people."

"he's a tar heel and he's our commissioner." I wonder how the other 11 schools feel about the Swoff supporting UNC's cheating which has affected every otehr school in teh conference. Did Swoff go to Indy for FSU and GT? I dont think so. This scumbag needs to go and now!

why yes, yes it was. did I mention we've beaten UNc 5 times in a row now even though the've been cheating like motherfuckers in a vain/delusional attempt to make themselves nationally relevant in football?

No. You never mentioned that. You have however reminded us all how much you hate your states signature school.

UNC-Chapel Hill is not the "signature" school in the state. they are part of the 17 school university system much like UNC-Wilmington, UNC-Pembroke, etc.

fyp. seriously, there's nothing anywhere official that denote the Cheats as a flagship institution.

That's how it's considered by many around the country. NC State engineering has a decent reputation though

unc-chapel hill is widely considered the flagship university for the State of North Carolina and perhaps they even deserve the designation. however there is nothing official giving them the title.

NC State's rep as an engineering school has declined since the '80's but hopefully is rising again under a new administration.
