Talent posted this interesting graph from the WSJ over at the Michigan forum. You can understand why SEC schools invest so much into their football programs when they are such a significant proportion of the school's total revenue. 14% of LSU's entire institutional revenue comes from football alone! Except for Florida and Georgia (and probably Vandy, private schools aren't on this chart), the SEC is more dependent on football revenue than elsewhere in the country.

He could turn a phrase.
Only the best for AA, the Batman of these boards. Any negativity towards the SEC, the Confederacy, or vienna sausages and faster than Spring-Heeled Jack he is upon you, his faithful sidekick, Glen Fiddich, at his side.

I defend when a pot begins to scream at a kettle for being black most times. I defend the tastiest of processed and canned meat by-product snacks because they are delicious. I defend you when someone says you are an ill-mannered moron with a bad user-name because Dr. Strangelove is one of my favorite movies (now if your user-name was jrg98, well, I would have to remain quiet).

And Shostakovich was a no-good, card-carrying commie. Anyone who disagrees with that fact is (a) a moron and (b) wrong.

It's interesting to explain how the SEC got to its position where it is today. Been talking about it on the other board for a while. I don't think population growth is a solid explanation, because if that was all it would take, then the SEC West shouldn't be remotely competitive with the SEC East and the ACC should be a LOT better than it is. Alabama is barely growing faster than Indiana and Louisiana is as stagnant as Ohio or Pennsylvania. So there's more to it than that.
As for dominating their markets, I think it's reasonable to point at the lack of major professional sports in the South before 1965 as a starting point. Arkansas, Kentucky, Mississippi, Alabama, and South Carolina still don't have a single major league team. Sports dollars poured into the college programs with no other outlets. Even today is there a single pro team in the South, any sport, that has a following similar to an average SEC team? Maybe the Dolphins, once upon a time, and Miami is not really an SEC city.

I work with a lot of people from areas of the country where college football is a past time, not religion. They can't understand why the city of Jacksonville doesn't support the Jaguars any better than they do re...blackout games in years past and such.
I point out to some that people here are going to Gator games on tickets purchased under their grandfathers name, and grandfather has been dead for a decade. They can't turn in the ticket, they'll never have an opportunity in their lifetime to buy those same seats.
I think it will take most of a generation to truly support the Jaguars like Cleveland Browns fans support that team. By then the Jags will be in LA.

Yep. You've got generations who have followed Bama football but there's still virtually no one in the right demographics who can say they grew up a Jaguars fan or a Titans fan. I don't think it's a regional thing because you've got the same kind of religious following at places like Nebraska which also lack pro sports.

Region has nothing to do with it. Demographics either. I believe it's locale. One guy at work who is a real sports nut, is a fan of the Steelers, Nitanny Lions, Penguins and Pirates, but could give a shit less about the NBA.

Watched the game in a hotel in Santiago. The spanish announcers were slightly less annoying than the English speaking ones.
