watching a documentary about the Spanish flu, it went away almost in a matter of weeks after its peak - so many people had become infected by it that it burned out due to lack of carriers.

There is a strong possibility that COVID will never be over, because it is unclear how long the body retains immunity. In the case of the 1918 flu, immunity to that strain was essentially life long. They were able to see strong antibody responses in people many decades later. If the immunity we develop to this is only a few years or less, it will never be eliminated.

I bet it will become weaker over time though, and in 20 years people will talk about getting the covid like we talk about getting the flu...

Our antibody response to the coronaviruses that we do get (that are potential causes of common cold) declines and we can become reinfected by them within as little as a year.

Yes, some scientists suspect that one particular common cold causing coronavirus that we get now is actually the culprit for the 1890 "Russian flu" epidemic. in a pretty similar event to what we are going through now.

was also reading a story about how these virus epidemic have a shelf like of about 12-14 months and then rapidly disappear. It seems there is a track record of that happening regardless of population size

it would be interesting if that is the case with this one as well.

LOL. Apparently the city of Austin (ie Austin Energy) agreed several years ago to a deal to buy power from a biomass (ie wood waste) plant in east Texas for a $50 million annual fee. But apparently they only ever needed the power during the summer, so to "get out of paying the annual fees" they decided to just buy the whole damn power plant for half a billion dollars in 2019. Then they submitted a new plan to the grid manager (ERCOT) that the plant was only seasonal. So their 100 MW power plant sat unused during this whole thing.
