New Bern and Elizabeth City would not be draws for me, but maybe that's b/c I've been so many times (and have fambly in E. City). But if you've never been, it might be worth it to swing thru on your way to Ocracoke. I would love to spend a few quite days out there. It will probably be getting somewhat cranked up by late May, but still shouldn't be too bad. Early May would be better, though...

I booked a Gatlinburg cabin for a few days in August last night. I asked the kids where they wanted to go and that's what they agreed on.

Whatever......

In other news I had what I take to be the real Kobe beef at a high end steak house last week. It was only an appetizer with bite size portions on skewers.

It was OK, but I didn't think it was as good as the bone in steak the place recommended for us. I don't normally care for restaurant steaks but this one was pretty amazing.
I like the stinky pinky but only up to the first knuckle, I do not want a GD thumb up there--I've told her multiple times and I always catch her when she tries to pull a fast one---it's my butthole for Chrissakes I'm gonna know--so cut out the BS.

We had a Big Chill weekend up there last fall, so this info probably won't do you any good if you have kids in tow..but here goes..

Gatlinburg now has two moonshine distilleries (Ol Smokey and Sugarlands) and one bourbon distillery (Davey Crockett) on the main drag, within knee-knocking walking/stumbling distance of each other. All three serve nyquil-cup-sized shots of every product they make, gratis, with an obligatory sales pitch for each. Ol Smokey alone has 9 varieties of their legal moonshine, so you'll leave there with a nice little buzz. Exit left, then go a block down to Sugarlands and repeat the process. Then cross the street to Crocketts'. This can become a rotation, but the sample staffs will cut you off if you are incoherent or cross-eyed.

Gatlinburg will undoubtably change their statutes wrt alcohol samples due to the mounting number of "unfortunate incidents," but until then..salud, slainte, and prost.

Hopefully you were the guy whose death prompted the gathering...

I'm thinking that "across the street to Crockett's" part is what's causing the difficulties...

last time I was there they were pimping wine but the moonshine hadn't come online yet.

I can easily see where Gatlinburg will want to key that under control

Damn, when I first read that I thought you said you were pimping wine. I didn't know what that meant, but I was looking forward to referring to you as the wine pimpah...

Build a highway through the Durian Gap and you could drive from the tip of South America to North America, Asia, Europe, and Africa.
