the attempted shutdown of Parler should be a major concern for people, as well as the cleansing of conservative voices from Facebook and twitter.

This , IMO, is nothing more than big tech realizing that with an administration change, Democrats smell blood in the water and eventually set their sites on social media platforms they believed contributed to the loss of the election for Hillary and gave way to Trump.

So they are going off into extremes to appease their new overlords.

Remember that Trump put in Adjit Pai and the first thing he did was dismantle the neutral net rules put in place by the Obama administration.

The new guy will probably revisit that , and spurred on by a congress that supports the suppression of free speech by classifying everything they don't like as hate speech, will likely go after platforms that allow opposing viewpoints to go unfiltered.

Parler's mistake was having their services managed externally by Amazon. They can't do much about Apple and Google removing them from their app store, but they could develop an easy to navigate phone interface in a broswer that would bypass the app stores on independent servers they own.

Parler has a great opportunity in front of them - to create the alternate platform , not just for hard core conservatives but for anyone that has been restricted in free speech by the current social media platforms. It would be the wild west

The best analogy is something most of us can reference.

Remember all the giant dickheads who would go on CCNSI and then throw a fit because people were saying things about their team they didn't like, so they went to fan specific sites and cried to the mods about locking down or banning users who said anything they disagreed with?

all of us are here because we loved the freedom CNNSI first offered. I haven't used or even seen Parler, but it has to be closer to CNNSI than any current social media platform which is full of those people that left CNNSI and demand that moderators protect their delicate sensibilities.

I understand why it happened. CNNSI was sold to Yahoo, they wanted to implement a more family friendly environment and eventually decided that platform with its people was unsalvageable, but everyone should have the right to say UNC fans are fucking hilljacks that have sex with their sisters. Taking that away seems ...well...UnAmerican.

I really wish that the internet would have been declared a public entity and protected under the same freedoms as public speaking and the press back in the mid 90's.

That's why I have trouble understanding why you of all people would want voices of dissent silenced. You've spent a good portion of your life being on the other side of that coin in regards to drug legalization and transvestite porn.
