I wouldn't upgrade anything if its doing what he wants. Upgrade usually means the OS is geared toward newer hardware.

if anyone is a fan of google earth, Google is making Google Earth Pro free now - It used to cost $399 a year.
You download it and then sign up to get a code sent to your email address.
Supposedly there is greater detail and resources for researchers, but I wouldn't be able to tell you what.
