Hard to believe it's been 2 years ago today since I stood in my front yard and watched an F-3 tornado coming toward my house. Was 80 degrees and was sitting out in back yard enjoying the sunshine around 5:30 when the western sky started getting greenish dark. Went in the house and the Lexington weather station was giving tornado warnings for this area but tbh, I was more or less laughing it off to my wife who was glued to the TV. They were showing the 'hook echo' on the radar and it was just to the west of us and I told the wife that tornadoes always travel a pattern of SW to NE and it would go to the north of us.... told her I was going out in the driveway to see if I could see it as it passed to the north. As I stepped off the carport, I looked up an couldn't believe what I was seeing. Mesmerizing to say the least.... I watched it as I came over the ridge about 3/4 miles away until it got just about 1/4 mile from the house... then it was time to hit the basement. The main part of the tornado veered to the south over town but I could look out the basement door window and actually look up into the monster... unbelieveable what what circulating overhead... trees, metal. limbs. leaves, mud anything imaginable.... and then the 'freight train' roar. That was the scary part... just knew the roof was coming off and could hear the house popping and cracking...but in about 30 seconds it was over. Went outside to see what was left of the neighborhood and to my surprise, only trees blown down and and metal buildings and carports blown over. Had no idea that the main part of town 1 mile away was completely destroyed until about a half and hour later. Sad part was that 7 people lost their lives in the county during the entire path of the tornado... The town is slowly rebuilding but it will never be the same... Most of the people who owned businesses on Main Street took the insurance money and ran. Probably will never see it rebuilt completely in my lifetime.

Video pretty much sums up the damage...

You guys are suppose to get some pretty rough weather tonight in Cincy. My niece lives in Mason and she was suppose to bring my sister to Lexington for a doctor's appointment tomorrow at UK but decided to come today and get a room overnight in Lex. Giving ice for my area.

I think the ice is past us and we still have power. Its so cold its only snow from here out - the say 4 - 6 inches. Not enough to shut down the city but they'll close school and I'll have an excuse to stay home from work.
