There is in Cincinnati. You always say "I'm going to Kroger's." Or, "I picked this up at JC Penny's." etc. You'd look a fool if you did otherwise in the 'nati.

I think its because most stores (Like Kroger's) were named after the owner back in the day. And you felt like you knew the owner. So it's just like you were saying that you were going to the Smith's tonight for dinner (after they go to Kroger's to pick up groceries.)

Even today the nomenclature only extends to stores with people's names. No one says "I'm going to Wal-Mart's."

Interesting point about why "The" never made its way in there., but it doesn't. Not sure why. I mean, I guess folks do call each other by the last name casually as well.

Oh but it did...

Perhaps its because we feel so familiar, its like you are on a first name basis with the store. You don't say "I'm having dinner at the Bob's tonight." Or, more likely, the full name of the stores used to be "Kroger's Grocery Stole" or "McAlpin's Department Store" so Cincinnatians are just shorthanding it.

What's wrong with having dinner at the Bob's?

you can say you picked that up at "Penny's" or you can say "JC Penny"

it all started with "Macy's" the possessive form of the family name that owned the retail chain was a short way to describe a store destination in conversation. that is part of Americana. as aTm would say, we are "dumb" everywhere

You don't go to the "Wal-Mart's" but you would go to the "Walton's" if every Wal-Mart in America was named "Walton."

Speaking of the Waltons, I wish somebody would say "Good night, IB" and it was permanent...

Mayhaps, but everyone in Cincy has always called it "Kroger's" as well as using the "s" on every other store with a fambly name. Its the norm for the city. You would sound weird if you didn't say it.

Like calling soda-pop "pop" for short instead of "soda". Its the norm in Cincy, but I've had it commented on as weird in Michigan and California.
