That's a pretty big hit just to have access to their platform if you're trying to monetize an app, especially for a game that has millions of users and profits from in-app purchasing..

Also Apple says this applies to everyone but they have a separate deal with Amazon for iOS apps where their cut is 15% and some apps like Spotify allow users to buy outside the platform like Epic is trying to do, so Epic is challenging them (and now Google) for charging access to their platform.

It could be a pretty big deal if Apple loses and it could lead to thousands of apps being developed for the platform that were never developed before. It could introduce competition to iPhone core functionality too, like cloud storage and contact editing - areas that Apple has a vice grip on and won't let anyone develop apps for it.

Google isn't as big because you can side load apps onto Android without going thru the google play store. Google generally just ignores those apps and there is a cottage industry out there dedicated to bypassing the google play store with filelinked, downloader and aptiva

But Apple has done a good job of keeping their iphones from being side loaded and as such they are considered a much more secure phone. That is their argument for forcing apps thru their apple store because they can "vet" them, but its also highly profitable
Our firm (our IT guy) -- like many law firms -- won't allow attorneys to use Android devices on our secure network or for work purposes due to the security issues. In fact, you are starting to see bar associations / state bars recommend avoiding Google / Android all together due to the plethora of data security issues.

Cook and Apple leadership saw this coming, and as much as folks want to claim that Epic "set a trap" for Apple, I would suspect that the world's first trillion dollar corporation decided that it was time to have this fight instead of just wandering haphazardly into a situation. I am sure that after tens of millions of dollars being spent on litigation that the sides will come to an agreement with which Apple can live while also protecting the "secure" marketing niche.

You can backup your photos, calendar entries, contacts and documents onto OneDrive and Google Drive for iOS. Obviously, the process is not as "automatic" like iCloud, but it's fairly simple. Like Apps and complete phone backups (although you can save the backup from your local drive to the third party cloud from your computer), you can't back up your texts / iMessages though, and I suspect that will be teed up as one of the proprietary sticking points you mentioned.

E, you know a hell of a lot more about this than I ever will, but as an avid Apple user who is "all in" due to simplicity and ease of use / integration (typing this on my home office Mac Mini, with my iPhone playing music, and my iPad streaming the baby monitor while I keep an eye my eight year old MacBook Pro and my wife's five year old MacBook Pro going through the update process), I do not want to see the "walled garden" having an open door like Android. I get the pricing issue, but while MacOS / iOS / iPadOS are not impervious to third party bad actors, the added layer of security that keeps things simple is nice.

They're not ignoring Trump's antics either. As much as they'd like to, he won't let them, not with his incessant tweeting and ranting and raving. Daily, constantly...
