Wonder where all that dook recruiting budget is coming from? Take a look at their nearly $13 billion endowment. And not a soul can question them with their “private school privilege”…

After experiencing a minor dip from 2019-20, Duke’s endowment returned nearly 56% during the past year in large part due to market resurgence and successful investments.

The fund has swollen to $12.7 billion after being capped at $8.5 billion last year. As of June 30, the endowment was made up of more than 5,600 individual funds, according to the 2020-21 endowment snapshot.

The endowment’s bounceback was the biggest one-year return since the 2016-17 fiscal year, during which it returned 12.9%. For comparison, the endowment in 2010-11 was around $5.7 billion, less than half of the current fund.

How is the endowment used?
A select portion of the endowment funds are disbursed each year in alignment with Duke’s needs. The “spending rate” for a given year is always 5.5% of the average value of the endowment over the prior three years.

This year, 22% was designated for bolstering financial aid and 20% for the support of certain faculty positions, according to the endowment snapshot. Nearly a third of endowed funds, and the largest portion spent, is designated for “unrestricted” support of the University.

Who manages the endowment?
The endowment is managed by DUMAC Inc., a Board of Trustees-approved nonprofit which also oversees Duke employee retirement assets, health system investments and The Duke Endowment, a private trust established by James B. Duke in 1924.

Following guidelines laid out by the board, DUMAC invests their portion of the endowment across a “broadly diversified portfolio of economic sectors,” including private equity in companies, corporate bonds, investments in infrastructure and real estate. Maintaining a variety of ventures reduces the risk of monetary loss, as DUMAC’s ultimate goal is to protect and grow the endowment.

With DUMAC managing the endowment, the fund’s yearly returns have consistently outperformed a combination benchmark of the MSCI All Country World Index, which represents the performance of the global equity market, and the Bloomberg Barclays Aggregate Index. Duke’s endowment is also expanding at a tremendous rate in comparison to the benchmark under DUMAC.

What’s next?
The Board of Trustees’ Resources Committee met with Duke and DUMAC leadership on Sept. 24 to discuss the management of the endowment and several other topics. DUMAC president Neal Triplett declined to comment on performance, but the summary of the meeting noted that the return “significantly strengthened the University’s balance sheet.”

word comes out that Cal lied to the fans about Sharpes eligibility and then he gets hammers for saying "I'm not going to put (a lottery pick) in a game just to win it"

and now guess what

Mack checked out about 2 weeks ago. He was looking for an exit strategy

hedge wrote: Mon Jan 24, 2022 3:02 pm What is it about Duke that all these motherfuckers want to go there? Is the veneer of elite academics that draws them? Knowing that there's no way in hell they'd ever be admitted to such a place except for basketball (that might be true of many schools and many players, but esp. Duke), so being able to say they went to Duke (even if only for a semester or two) is some kind of stroke to their ego? I don't know, but they goddamn sure keep getting the recruits...
1) Nike
2) They perfected the “jobs for parents” scam 20+ years ago.
3) The NCAA will not touch them while the Rat is there, and with NIL, it’s probably too late. However, Chris Duhon’s mom ran an in home daycare in BFE Louisiana and once he went to Dook, she got a $100k job in RTP for a pharma company started by a major Iron Dook. That was 20+ years ago and was reported by the N&O iirc. Nothing came of it.
4) Iron Dooks have McMansions in some of the northern Durham neighborhoods around Treyburn CC, and those homes are “leased” to the parents of elite recruits upon signing / enrolling at Dook.
5) the basketball team doesn’t have much contact with that bunch of dorks in the student body. That would hurt recruiting. The dirty secret is that Dook has a program with NC Central (HBCU in Durham for those who don’t know) wherein students at both schools can enroll in classes at either school and receive full credit. I’m not knocking Central, but I doubt that the courses are as rigorous as Dook’s general offerings. Furthermore, most of Dook’s players are more comfortable at a HBCU when compared to Dook’s Asian and northern honky filled campus.
6) Because of the Rat being a master marketing and used car salesman under the veneer of “leader of men” and Vitale licking K’s boots and sending his grandkids to Dook, Dook got constant favorable treatment from ESPN even when Carolina had the equal or superior program.
7) K and his “love” for Valvano. Coach Smith and Valvano were actual friends when the two competed against each other, and Coach Smith even talked about it in his autobiography by saying that V was the only ACC coach with whom Smith could ever have a close friendship. They even made it a point to socialize with each other and their spouses. Coach Smith was the one V asked to throw the pitch out at opening day for the Yankees in 1993 when V was sick, not K. Smith would never try to use V and their friendship for self promotion. The Rat did, and ESPN ate it up.
8) K was the first person to be a “permanent” national team coach for multiple Olympic cycles, and K used that to burnish his NBA credentials. Prior to that, outside of Grant Hill, K had never coached and developed an elite NBA player, and it was something constantly talked about. Watch the 2009 HBO documentary on the Carolina v Dook rivalry and MJ talks about it, as do others iirc. That hurt Dook in recruiting (look at that shitass 2010 welfare title team and really most of those teams in the 2000’s after Boozer / Williams / Dunleavy), and they lacked players who were going to be long term NBA players. Once K had the NBA players singing his praises, he became the one-and-done king. Note: K’s only title since the 2010 fluke was the 2015 team, which was a fluke but not as big of a joke as 2010. The media ignores that shit though.

Fun fact. K loved Valvano so much there were rumors that K shared that love with Pam (V’s widow) and that getting caught was the real reason for the “back problems” forcing him to sit out 1995 so K and that repulsive cunt of a wife he has could do “save the marriage” shit. In a SI article, Vince Carter discussed his “in season” recruiting trip to Dook and talked about how K moved around normally and was bouncing around like nothing was wrong.

My mother-in-law’s husband sold his tickets for k’s final home game. It’s the Carolina game. I know he was holding out for more when he was offered $50k. He hasn’t said what he received, but when I asked if he had sold the tickets yet, he smiled and nodded. Hell, he and a guy I know from the golf course were getting $2k+ plus per ticket for weeknight games against shit teams and lower end conference games.

That would be simple. Pick one of those ending scenes from Titanic that show the band playing and photoshop the coaching staff’s faces onto the band playing as everyone drowns.

Bruce Pearl has developed the Cal killer reputation as a coach.

Lot of people thinking UL will go after him hard.

Is that what that bunch of idiots need? They might as well start drafting the press release announcing the death penalty being imposed for repeated violations because even with NIL and the new rules, Pearl will find a way to cheat. He's dirtier than a fraternity house basement.
