This is the Alabama thread, AA. Naturally, Ohio State is an interesting team and you eagerly want to talk about them. But there's a time and a place for everything. That said the best team played in the past 4 years was probably 2010 Miami. And yes, 2008 was the last 10-win BCS team that we played OOC. I believe the last for Alabama was 2009 VA Tech, and of course that was in a neutral site because Alabama has no desire to travel to Blacksburg. Coach Saban is uncomfortable playing in a hostile environment.

But the current debate is over Alabama and whether they should be embarrassed to have only played 3 true road games (one of them at Duke) in the past 11 seasons. I'm guessing "the SEC is a war every week" is part of the justification here, even though the rest of the SEC plays quite a few more road games.

Though, I suspect you favor Candy Crowley, you do not set the debate here, DSL.

So, Ohio State hasn't scheduled a 10-win BCS opponent since Bush was in office? Shameful. And the 2010 Miami team? Really? They were 7-6 - their 6 losses included losses to two 8-win teams and a 4-win Virginia team. And ...that's...the....best? W. O.W. Good thing you don't throw stones....oh, wait.

I addressed some of your fine points, AA, and I completely understand your interest in Ohio State football.

Now have you any answers why Alabama follows a policy of chickenshit OOC scheduling? I know you like to brag about having played Michigan and Penn State but, well, we play those teams every year.

Sure, DSL:

I, for one, applaud Nick Saban's bravery. Lesser coaches demand the coward's refuge of playing their tough non-con in the friendly confines of their home field every other year. Not Nick Saban! He eschews such comforts, advantages, and pleasantries in favor of a neutral site venue - where a team's true measure is on display, not some uneven officiating and a partisan crowd to wrench a win from a better team as some scoundrels are wont. He also manages to recruit some at these faraway lands.

God bless Coach Saban the Brave!

Since we've established that before this year Ohio State hasn't had a quality opponent OOC since Bush was president, let's now look at who they've played THIS year. Surely, it can't be worse than the dogcrap that they've faced over the last 3+ years:

1) 20-pt-win at home vs Buffalo, 2-2 (took Buffalo 5OTs to beat Stony Brook; Baylor hung 70 on this team).

2) 35-pt-win at home vs San Diego State, 1-3 (only win was vs 0-5 New Mexico State).

3) 18-pt-win at California, 1-3 (only win was a 7-point nailbiter vs Div 1-AA Portland State)

4) 76-pt win vs (Div 1-AA) Florida A&M, 1-3 (only win was vs a winless Div 1-AA team, Miss Valley State. Losses to SAMford and Tennessee St).

* So, combined, Ohio State beat their OOC opponents by 149 points (37-point MOV average).

* Combined, Ohio State's opponents (one of which is a 1-AA team) has a 5-11 record so far - bet it gets much worse before the year is over.

Outstanding.

* Buffalo, California, San Diego State, and the Mighty Rattlers of FAMU? WOOF! One can only applaud and admire Urban for playing such an arduous slate fraught with obvious peril.

"AA, this isn't about Ohio State. Don't change the subject. The topic is why Alabama is so much more pussified in its scheduling than fellow SEC members LSU and Georgia."

Wait, a few posts later you reveal that LSU has only played 5 true road games since 2003. I guess on a percentage basis, 5 might qualify as a lot more than 3, but otherwise, not so much...

"I'm guessing "the SEC is a war every week" is part of the justification here, even though the rest of the SEC plays quite a few more road games."

LSU (5): Arizona, Arizona State, Tulane, Washington, West VIrginia
Arkansas (4): Texas (2x), USC, Rutgers
Alabama (3): Hawaii, Duke, Penn State
Auburn (3): Georgia Tech, West Virginia, Clemson

And, not saying they don't count, but the vast majority of the OOC games that the SEC teams who do play quite a few more of them are yearly traditional rivalry games like Clemson, FSU and Ga. Tech...
