The best thing to come out of last night is that we are slowly pushing towards a playoff, thanks in part to the uncompetitive game and to the huge hit in the ratings every BCS game took. Even when including ONLY homes that get ESPN, eight other title games received better ratings within that demographic.

This article suggest the tv ratings were actually THE worst ever. Not sure which is accurate, worst or second-worst, but either way, it was bad. A disaster for ESPN, college football, and the human race.

Actually, the ratings are being contested. At least one service shows it as a 16.9 share.

Which service was that? ESPN's own in-house version?

I don't know. I do know that I've never worried about TV ratings for any sporting event I've watched and I don't plan to start now.

Crummy ratings will help change the sport. An informed fan would take notice.

Do try and follow the numbers

Look, I'm sorry my great-great-great-great granddaddy took your great-great-great grandad's pewter cup as a souvenir at the Battle of Stone River and never returned it. Let it go, man. It was a long time ago!

The ratings are something called "Neilson Fast National Household Coverage" ratings. They list a range between 16.2 and 17.7. Last year's title game was a 15.29.

I believe that rating measures only homes with ESPN, which is why it is higher. That rating was mentioned in the WashPo article.

A home without espn in 2012 is not a factor. They aren't even sports fans.

Let me ask it this way, DSL: when you move outta your mom's house and are moving into your trailer, would you consider (for even one second) not having espn?

DSL, I suppose many people do like to see nothing but offense running up and down a field. Is Okie light's offense better than Oregon's last season? Or Tejas circa 09? 'Cause our defense this year was a damn sight better than Auburn's from last season. Possibly (probably) better than our 09 squad. That high powered offense versus a real defense hasn't fared too well of late.

No. I go back to my original statement. The one from UConn's coach?...They can step up. Til then, Roll Tide.

I can't believe you missed that. You may be qualified to be a SEC ref.
