the staffers weren't so much pissed about being let go now, although they should be, but they were pissed they had to pay taxes to the tune of $400 - $800 on iPhones, tablets and laptops bought for them as part of the package to come work for him

this infuriates me

I was talking to my son about 3 weeks ago because he was giving me shit for having masks. He was telling me how the CDC was telling people that wearing masks wasn't going to be particularly effective against this virus, and I told him that was complete horseshit. Not that the masks were complete protection but the CDC was lying to people for 2 reasons.

1. They knew that if they told Americans that wearing masks was an effective preventative measure against this virus in close spaces that people would be fighting in the aisles of CVS for these things
2. because of that there would be a shortage in hospitals and people in the front line so to speak would not be able to get them

my wife did some volunteer work at Bethesda here and I was telling her back in January I was going to buy some masks from amazon as a CYA measure if this thing blew up here, and she was like, don't bother, they have those things laying around at the hospital and they wont care if I take a box. So there is a lull in her volunteer work and she doesn't go back until the second week of February. She tells me every mask in the stock close is gone. People pilfered every one of them.

so now once the national stockpile is essentially depleted and we have old women in nursing homes sewing maskshift masks , Fauci comes out and says that "hey , you know, maybe you should start wearing masks"

I understand the position the CDC was in, but lying to the people in order to protect a certain segment of the population is wrong no matter how you slice it. Had they told people that wearing masks was effective (like you know, all you had to do was watch a newscast from China to tell that the Chinese were all in on wearing masks) then perhaps we would have bought 3 more weeks of time for corporations to convert over and start making in mass quantities.

This is the same mentality as a Sheriff in Los Angeles or Seattle making the decision to close gun stores because they didn't think the it was a good idea to introduce thousands of first time gun owners into the general public during a pandemic.

It was self serving more than it was greater good.

More Joe Biden nonsense. Can you imagine this goof doing a daily virus update for an hour or more like Trump does? ........and to think there's morons here at TGP that think he's more capable of leading the country instead of Trump. Utterly stupid.

speaking of the wall, I would assume that Mexico is about 2 months away from a complete meltdown with this - Mexico City, the yucatan and baja peninsulas. Right now they are worried about infected Americans coming into their country. That will shift when we start winding down. Border security will take on a different tone and we'll see how many people are for open borders after experiencing someone they know dying from a person to person spread virus.

GOP Senator Reports Millions More In Stock Sales, Dumping Retailers to Invest in Medical Gear

New financial disclosures from Sen. Kelly Loeffler (R-GA) reveal she dumped more stocks last month and then reinvested in a medical company making equipment to fight COVID-19 as the disease started to slam the United States.
Loeffler — who is married to Jeffrey Sprecher, chairman of the New York Stock Exchange and CEO of the business services company Intercontinental Exchange — has been under scrutiny for weeks ever since it was reported that she made dozens of stock sales after getting briefed on COVID-19 months ago. The Atlanta Journal Constitution published a report on Wednesday on Loeffler’s latest financial disclosure forms, and Intercontinental Exchange sold $18.7 million worth of stock in three deals from late February to early March.

She sharpened her aim after the first round of stocks she dumped...later on she dumped stocks in favor of investing in PPE. There has to be a special place in hell for somebody like that, right? All kinds of shady politicians use inside info to enrich themselves, but these senators picked the absolute wrong time to pull this shit.

The outside guys use a lot of masks around here (very dusty around the grain elevators) so we typically order 10 boxes at a time of the N-95's. Sometime in mid-January one of the guys told me we were getting low and asked me to order some more, so I went to Amazon and, like I do every time, clicked on the previous order from a few months back and hit "re-order." Of course, it came back as "out of stock." I didn't think much about it, just went to the search bar and typed it in, figured I'd get it from a different vendor at close to the same price. No luck. Couldn't find any on Amazon. I didn't know what to think for a minute and then figured the chinese had bought them out due to coronavirus. I should've known right then that this was something pretty serious, but I just chalked it up to the chinese being skittish...

(Stealing aTm's thunder) In fairness, the market had already puked by then, I can easily see how her broker could've made that decision at that time based on public knowledge. Esp. considering that $18 million is play money for her (she's reportedly worth $500 mil). "Get out of retail, get into covid-related medical" wasn't really a stroke of genius by early March, certainly something I'd think a decent broker would be willing to take a flier on. But I agree it isn't the best look...

Now then, Burr seems to be a different story. My understanding is that he dumped pretty much his entire net worth well before the market started to tank and he hadn't alerted anybody of his fears except a cadre of high dollar donors. That seems worse to me than Loeffler's transactions, which amount to a day trade compared to her entire portfolio...

In all seriousness, one big concern to our people and entire country is not only the fact that we will be dealing with this Chinese virus all spring, summer and fall and even later, but we are also entering the tornado and hurricane season. One can only hope and pray it's not a catastrophic season. The country has enough to deal with already. Surely some of you misfits who wish harm to others can agree.

chinese suppliers in Australia shipped back a huge percentage of Australian masks after Australia had ordered them and they arrived in distribution centers. They did this without asking/notifying them so the Australians believed they had X amount of masks only to find out the Chinese essentially stole them
