Thanks guys. She had been battling endometrial cancer for about 6 years. I never mentioned it in here, not sure why, seeing as you guys know more about me than most of my "real" friends do. She was tough, her oncologist told us this summer that he was sure she would've been gone years ago and had no explanation of why she was still here, but they probably tell that to everybody. But then he said that based on her latest scans, it would be a matter of months, not years. He was right this time. He had already been very forthright with her the whole time, as she wanted, and had told her that unless she got hit by a train or something, the cancer would be the thing that killed her eventually. So it wasn't a shock by any means but it's still awful.
She gradually declined over the past few months. We watched a bunch of movies, I read to her, all that stuff. She got more and more weak physically, but her mind was still there. Then last weekend her kidneys started shutting down. She was already on home hospice, but they suggested taking her to the local facility so they could use IV drugs if needed, and it was needed. The past few days she was basically out of it and I'm glad. She was worn out. She told me on more than a few evenings that she hoped she just wouldn't wake up the next morning. I was there this morning, her breathing was very labored, I was making sure she got her IV dilaudid every 4 hours. I wasn't even talking to her, I didn't want her to be awake or even partially awake and struggling like that, and we had already said everything we needed to say. Around 1 o'clock her breathing got markedly shallower and her color paler. I did go to her then and whisper some things in her ear, just telling her it was alright to let go and how much I was going to miss her. All that stuff. I don't know if she heard it or if it made a difference if she did. Her breaths got more shallow and further apart, just the tiniest sips of air. And then nothing. She was there for my first breath and I was there for her last. I'm glad I was with her, whether she knew it or not. I hope she did though. I'm really going to miss her...
