The NBA has been a niche, connoisseur's sport for most its existence and so it continues to be. The NCAA, NFL, and MLB have done a better job of whitewashing their unseemly aspects and are firmly aligned with God, America, building character, tradition, and all that jazz.

I agree with Brook, the level of talent and play in the NBA are excellent right now.

The dream teaming of Chris Paul and Dwight Howard on the Lakers remains a distinct possibility.

Besides promising negotiations with the Hornets and Rockets to improve what the NBA-owned Hornets get for sending Paul to the Lakers, the latest report is that the Lakers have gained permission to negotiate with Howard’s agent, Dan Fegan.

Orlando spokesman Joel Glass informed SI.com’s Sam Amick on Friday night that the Magic has granted permission going forward to Fegan to work on a trade with three teams: the Lakers, Mavericks and Nets. That’s a big step considering Orlando had been clinging to hope that Howard would still want to stay with the Magic.

Meanwhile, Yahoo! Sports’ Adrian Wojnarowski reported the revamped Lakers’ deal still in the works for Paul would still send Pau Gasol to Houston and Lamar Odom to New Orleans, but the Hornets would come out with more young talent (likely from Houston) and draft picks (likely from the Lakers).

Damn, I really would hate it if the Rockets in any way provide more to this deal. They already are providing the most for the least.

Lakers pull out of Paul deal, but may still do deal w/Dallas...and CP3 could still show up in LA

Think they have written off CP3 and will aggressively go after Howard.

I in no way liked this trade for the Rockets. I'd rather they keep what they have and try to sign someone like Dalembert or Chandler. Sometimes I think Morey trades just to keep himself busy.

That said, David Stern needs to have his hole plugged by an iron spike while gorillas rip his limbs from his body.

Odom for a late 1st round pick?

Has to be a salary dump/precursor to some bigger move.

Cuban baffles me

he S+T's Chandler to NYC then uses the traded player exception on Odom?

why not just sign & keep Chandler?

How much money did he save...4 or 5 million? I think that would translate to $12M in 2 years. I guess that's why.

Anyway, Bean is pissed...http://espn.go.com/los-angeles/nba/stor ... ar-odom-it

and he took the money he saved to sign a busted up & broken Vince Carter

who is Dallas' center now? Who will guard Bynum/Gasol etc.

better yet, who is going to guard Dwight Howard now that you have facilitated LA's next power move?

Funny that Stern vetoes the Paul deal, but okays LA giving away Odom for cash and some free copies of the Final Season of Entourage on blue ray.

Other than a cash dump, there's not much benefit to the Lakers. And you like you say... how much are the really saving? Unless they're able to bring Howard in, this weakens the Lakers more than it helps them.

Kobe should be pissed. You trade a valuble asset for nothing. What good is a draft pick from Dallas? And you trade them to your main rival this year and the defending champions for nothing

no, they traded Odom to clear enough cap room for the Lakers to make a bigger move (see Dwight Howard)

Cuban actually helped them out
