It's a deceiving stat. UVA and UNC are relatively small for flagship state universities.

UNC has 19k undergraduate students.

UVA has 17k undergraduate students.

OU has 23k undergraduate students.

Bama has 33k undergraduate students.

UNC is further limited by a state law that caps out of state undergraduate enrollment for incoming classes at 18%.

Its a deceiving stat because not all National Merit Scholarships are the same thing. The very best schools generally dont care about it at all, they have lots of them simply because lots of smart kids want to go there without them doing anything. Some only give a national merit scholarship of about $2000 or something like that. Generally the big publics at the top of the numbers lists (Florida, Oklahoma, Alabama, even Auburn, A&M etc) are the schools basically giving out full rides or substantial scholarships. So like a NMS finalist who does not tick the poor or minority boxes for lots of aid probably has a choice between like a couple thousand dollars from a school like Rice vs a complete free ride at A&M or OU. A rich kid probably goes to Rice, a middle class suburban kid to A&M or OU.

one of the NMSF from last year went to A&M from our local high school because of the scholarship

lotta stuff coming from the trial today

Adam Zagoria
‏Marty Blazer testified that he and Christian Dawkins Fed-exed $11,000 in a shoe to then Texas A&M F Robert Williams.

Christian Dawkins on videotape talks about Zion’s recruitment, saying its ‘gonna be crazy. Duke is gonna have their resources. UNC is UNC. Kentucky, they have their resources. ‘So if comes down to (it)...we’ll be able to make sure everything’s good for the parent & everything.’

‘If I let my kid go to Kentucky, I promise you I won’t get him back.’
Merl Code on not wanting to send recruits to Kentucky b/c he would lose control over them in the NBA process.’

Nike schools pay, too...In some form or fashion, Duke, North Carolina, Syracuse, Kentucky, all of the schools are doing something to help get kids. That’s just part of the space.’ - Merl Code on video June 2017

If you morons are too dumb to understand the difference between Christian Dawkins saying he believes Duke, Kentucky and UNC have resources to get things done, and Christian Dawkins saying Sean Miller acknowledged rules violations to him in phone calls, I can’t help you.- Gary Parrish

Marty Blazer testified : ‘I understood that to mean he had been taking care of payments for Deandre Ayton. Sean Miller was taking care of everything for Deandre Ayton and his family.’-Zagoria

If this is going on in college basketball, just think what's going on in college football...

Basketball is worse than football. The AAU and various sponsor leagues have insured that.

from what I can tell, the difference between Nike and Adidas is Nike is hiring parents/handlers to be consultants and in turn that salary allows them to buy the homes/cars, whatever and this is all above board - at least in the bylines of the NCAA

whereas Adidas was just handing out cash

Agreed. Easier to control a roster of 15 than a roster of 88. College basketball has always been corrupt much more than football.

Today a recording of a conversation with Arizona assistant Book Richardson revealed that Wade(LSU Coach) had plenty of money reserved for Naz Reid. According to Yahoo, Wade told Richardson, “Look, there’s a deal in place, I got $300,000 for him.”

Roy signed 3 guys last week, top 3 high schooler Cole Anthony, another top 50 guard as backup, one of the top grad transfers in the country Christian Keeling and now another top 10 grad transfer, Justin Pierce, is set to announce at noon and the guys at IC think he's ours. That's a pretty good haul, even if we don't get Pierce...
