I have seen the food stamp card people at wal-mart. Never noticed them at Publix - of course, with the cards, you don't notice as much like you did when they had the stamps they had to tear outta the booklet.

That's interesting, Hack. I never notice people using food stamps at my Krogers...maybe I'll keep a watchful eye out for that sort of thing. Around here you have to venture out to the bargain and thrift stores to find that kind of activity.

Anyway, sorry to hear about how things have deteriorated in your neighborhood. Although I must say, you don't appear to be all that sympathetic. Is it because they are buying brands that you consider to be too good for their predicament? Understandable - that kind of sentiment has gained a lot of ground the last generation or so. Hah - do you remember my story not long ago about finding that 8-track tape of Welfare Cadillac? (It occurs to me that there aren't any good songs about Corporate Welfare - LOL).

Keep us up to speed on the food stamps - that's a disquieting situation. You can bet I'm going to pay more attention next time I go buy groceries.

Ciao for now!
Blutick lives in Farragut and shops at the only SuperKrogers in town. Farragut is the richer part of town.

Can't say that I have seen it there either but its basically a debit card now is it not? If so, how would you know unless you see the card or some product is ineligible for the program? I'm sure WMT has a much higher use rate in East Town, then Gallaher View and then Turkey creek.

Congressman from the top rope with the atomic elbow...

MSNBC To GOP Congressman: "Do You Have A Degree In Economics?"

http://www.realclearpolitics.com/video/ ... omics.html

"Yes ma'am, I do. Highest honors," Rep. Brooks responded.

According to his Congressional page: "Mo graduated from Duke University in three years with a double major in political science and economics, with highest honors in economics. In 1978, he graduated from the University of Alabama Law School."

BTW whatever agreement ends up coming out of DC if it doesn't include spending cuts with teeth in it and just promises of cuts in the future its fucking doomed and they won't happen unless the GOP controls all in 2012. Even then only maybe.

If you don't make the hard decisions when the pressure is on, no way it will happen later.

I think this news comes as a surprise to absolutely no one.

I do not see the "Oregon Trail" card being used as much at the higher-end grocers in this area. But I have noticed them there as well. And I don't make it a point to watch how people are paying for stuff. There are probably people using it a lot of times when I don't take notice of it.

I also see a lot of young, seemingly able-bodied people standing at intersections and at the top of on-ramps, holding signs asking for money. I guess it's unseemly of me that I happen to notice them, too.

Those are leperchauns. You should jump out of your car and try to catch them. Make them tell you where they keep their pots o' gold.

Those cards are real handy when you're in the mood for beer and lotto tickets.

I think the cards have hindered us somewhat. There needs to be a little stigma to living on the taxpayer teat.

The card makes it too easy to go unnoticed. Too easy to slip through, and too much like you are actually paying for it yourself.

Being on the teat doesn't need to be comfortable or normal.

Dunce caps with bar codes?

They could remove the dunce cap. Better use a tattoo instead. If they go off the dole, then it can be lasered off. The scar left behind would remind them of their shame and help prevent them from going back on the dole. Though, come to think of it, they could cover the tattoo with their clothes, so they should also be made to have a big yellow "W" sewn into all their clothing.

No but there needs to be some inconvenience and humility involved in using them.

They have eliminated going to the welfare office and signing up etc. You can fill things out in your own home, you get your "debit" card in the mail and some of them you can even get "cash back" on them.

Way too easy.

It sould be somewhat uncomfortable to mooch.

DSL,

It's summer. It's supposed to be hot.

We have to explain this to him every year.
