First, JD recently admitted that he has a couple of friends that are black Republicans (at least they had the common decency to be disturbed by Trump's election). Even still, I never figured JD to associate with Uncle Tom's.

Now he says he's got relatives that are crackers.

What's the world coming to?

I do have white people in my family, but no blacks or browns....so, I'm confused. What do I apologize for first??

Yes, I have some in the fam. And if we go by the "one drop rule," I'm a zebra - my paternal great great granddaddy was white (paternal great great grandmother was a slave). My granddaddy had blue eyes and his brother was one of the (many) fair-skinned negroes who got tired of being treated like he was black, moved across the country and passed as white (his descendants are still doing so, AFAIK).

I have always been amazed how, when black people describe other people, they always say he/she is "light skinned" or "dark skinned" first, and then say tall or short, skinny or fat, etc. There are even general stereotypes about "light skins" and "dark skins." Is that widespread or just an ATL thing?

In an ironic twist, a new study has found that some of the states with the most racial tension are also the ones where the most white people have black ancestors. The findings published this month in the American Journal of Human Genetics found that whites in the South were far more likely to have black ancestry than any other part of the country.

Researchers examined 145,000 DNA samples provided to genetic testing company 23andme for ancestry analysis. They have now determined that at least six million Americans who called themselves white had at least 1 percent African ancestry.

The genes they are finding are within the last 180 years or so, so it's not from Olduvai Gorge.

It wasn't all from cruel male slave owners, either. 20% of the "white" DNA found in African Americans originated from white females (according to the data). So it appears that some of the time while Massa was out getting his, Missy went and got hers, as well.

I might get that ancestry blood test. If I discover some black ancestry, I'll show it to my rural Georgia relatives on my father's side at the next family reunion and watch them freak out.

Not much chance on my mother's side. They're one generation from Ireland and all accounted for. Not too many potential black ancestors in Ireland.

I've done the DNA ancestry thingy and it came back:

1. Irish
2. Scandinavia
3. Eastern Europe

...the top two accounted for over 80% of my DNA

There's no hope for me.

Depending on how long ago you did it, you may want to retest. One of the big DNA testers had a bunch of false Scandinavian reads in the early part of this decade. Not that it'll come back as sub-saharan african, but they mistyped a lot of German & Russian DNA as Scandinavian.
