Tepid top 40 "rock" with a nod to easy listening country. Unoriginal elevator muzak. Wildly popular with the lowest common denominator. Their music isn't necessarily bad, it's just not good by any measurement I employ. The fact that that kind of music was (and is, I guess) so wildly and widely popular kinda annoys me. They were doing a tribute on some XM station this morning (classic vinyl or some such) and everybody who called in was saying how much they loved going to an Eagles show b/c it was just like listening to the album, every time. One lady went so far as to say she could close her eyes at an Eagles concert and it was just like sitting in her room listening to the album, note for note, chord for chord. That's not my kind of concert. Any cover band could do that. Plus, the voices of every person that called in were annoying. Finally, the name. I realize many band names are pretty vanilla, but "The Eagles"? That's the worst. It's like they were sitting around trying to figure out a band name and somebody blurted out "What about 'The Eagles'?" and everybody was like "Yeah, cool, The Eagles!" Blah...

These lyrics are immortal...

The heat is on, on the street
Inside your head, on every beat
And the beat's so loud, deep inside
The pressure's high, just to stay alive
'Cause the heat is on

Oh woo oh ho, oh woo oh ho
Caught up in the action I've been looking out for you
Oh woo oh ho, oh woo oh ho
Tell me can you feel it? Tell me can you feel it?
Tell me can you feel it?

The heat is on, the heat is on
The heat is on, it's on the street
The heat is on

Oh woo oh ho, oh woo oh ho
Caught up in the action I've been looking out for you
Oh woo oh ho, oh woo oh ho
Tell me can you feel it? Tell me can you feel it?
Tell me can you feel it?

The heat is on, the heat is on
The heat is on, it's on the street
The heat is on

The shadows are on the darker side
Behind those doors, it's a wilder ride
You can make a break, you can win or lose
That's a chance you take when the heat's on you
When the heat is on

Oh woo oh ho, oh woo oh ho
Caught up in the action I've been looking out for you
Oh woo oh ho, oh woo oh ho
Tell me can you feel it? Tell me can you feel it?
Tell me can you feel it?

The heat is on, the heat is on
The heat is on, it's on the street
The heat is on, the heat is on
The heat is on, it's on the street
The heat is on, the heat is on

Frye preferred "Eagles" over "The Eagles".

I'd prefer you "dead" over "alive"...

Like I said, I don't think most of the Eagles music is awful, just boring. It's background music. Which is why I have never understood why or how they sold so many records...

I liked Frey ever since, as a little kid, I saw him on Miami Vice. Then, after his work was sampled by hip hop producers in the late 80s, I was hooked. I liked the Eagles, for what they were.

Frank Ocean's "American Wedding" (which uses Hotel California) is dope, too. RIP, Glen. Say what's up to Calderone and Bon Jovi, for me.

The Eagles wrote alot of catchy tunes which is why they were so popular. Not really my thing and apparently they were all asses but they sort of created their own genre so I'll give them that. Besides there were/are plenty of other bands far worse than the Eagles

my friend and I were at a bar one night with a dude covering Eagles songs

He was all serious like "lets turn the lights down low now, I'd like to sing a song that really means something to me" kind of thing

so he starts singing and every time he'd get to the dramatic pause in the song, my friend and I would yell out "DESPERADO" off key before he could say it.

He got pissed off at us and told us we ruined the moment for all these people - a handful of fucking drunks in some dive bar being sung to by a guy getting paid in free drinks because they couldn't afford a karaoke machine

ahh...good times...fuck that guy

They turnt on me, too, the night I played "I Will Always Love You" 5 times in a row on the jukebox in that bar in SF. I kind of gave myself away by laughing so hard by the 3rd one

more discomncerting is watching these fukers die that are only 15 years olker then me

I feel you on that hedge. Although I think I was expecting something more philosophical when you said "what they stood for". They became millionaires with their stuff. I respect people who fill a niche and become successful. It was def more pop than hardline rock, though.
