Dr. John is doing a residency at Brooklyn Academy of Music for 3 weeks. The first week was a Louis Armstrong tribute. The final week is a Nawlins funk extravaganza with Trombone Shorty, Ivan Neville and others. This week was for his new stuff that he did with Dan Auerbach (Black Keys). So, I went to peep the show last night

It was good shit. I couldn't really understand shit he was saying, but that's been the case for 30 years...

Yeah. They kinda shot their load with that first season. The music wasn't as good in the following season. But there were a bunch of hilarious, quality songs they put together on that first go 'round. It makes sense, considering they had a bunch of time to come up with content for the first season...which as some new stuff and standards they used in their stage shows.

Second season a different story.

I don't know where to begin on this.

I'm a big fan of a Brazilian soul/jazz singer named Ed Motta. He publishes an online periodical that has a bunch of left-field shit in it. One edition of the "daily" covers an old Austrian photog who immigrated to the US in 1929 and set up a studio to shoot up and coming artists. He shot Sinatra, Dean and Sammy and countless other stars. He also shot a bunch of upstarts that never made it. Someone acquired a bunch of these pics and loaded some of the more interesting ones online.

There is just so much good stuff on here, I don't know what to say. I can't even imagine why they did not take the music world by storm...

speaking of deceased lyrcists I pulled out a mixtape for my fave... BIG L

so nice, but being older and analyzing his shyt, he really threw away a ton of punchlines with his style, all the quicktalk and such

he should have structured his flow better, he's still my favourite

"so ahead of my time my parents haven't met yet"

My problem with Big L was his voice. Just didn't hold me song after song. He was a bananas writer.

Lupe's hot-assed pen...

You can be a Burns or Smithers, tyrant or a slave, but nothing in the middle:

no doubt

is that an album track though? I just looked up TROY and that dropped in 95, wow 17 years ago

I guess that's past the acceptable threshold for just rippin a beat straight without any alteration?

I think it's a teaser track for his upcoming Food and Liquor II. Actually, the beat issue is MUCH more complicated than that. It's a straight REPRODUCTION of Pete's original sample. Some parts they had to have played by session artists because parts of the sample you can't clear anymore.

It was more crazy because apparently Lupe's camp cleared the sample with Warner (who owns the rights to the original "Today" - by Tom Scott and the California Dreamers track) BUT they also talked to Pete about using it (even though they did not have to). Originally, Pete was saying that the song was incredibly emotional for him, especially after the death of Heav. So, he wasn't sure he was with usage. Then Lu's people kept at it and he subsequently gave his blessing. Then, after the track dropped, he went on a Twitter blast talking about Lupe disrespecting him, stealing his beats and whatnot.

Lupe was hot. So hot that they called Pete and squashed it, but Pete did not recant in the full manner that he promised to. As far as Lupe is concerned, Pete shat on his name and did come back hard enough to say that Lupe didn't steal anything and he gave his blessing. So now, Lu is in a full on blood feud with PR and doesn't want anything to do with him anymore.
