Re: MIT Engineers
you guys will be happy to hear that some neighborhood kids stole from our cars Tuesday night last week. I left the cars unlocked as I always do and we got in the cars Wednesday morning to see shit scattered everywhere. They ended up with maybe $5 in change from both cars.
At first I went into tiger trap mode but I got over it, fuck it, its $5. I would have given it to them if they had asked. They didn't hurt the cars or steal the radar detectors or anything like that.
But what I have done is - last year I bought a game camera and I also have this cool SD card with built in wifi. So what I'm going to do is setup the game camera to point at my driveway, and when it takes a picture, the SD card is also connected to my wireless network and it automatically uploads the picture to my computer and sends me an email giving me a total of pictures uploaded every couple of hours. If the card starts to get full, it deletes the old pictures that have already been uploaded.
I just need to get my lazy ass up a ladder to mount it where they can't get to it. If I do happen to catch them on camera, I'm not going to call the police but I will drop a picture off in their mailbox with a note attached.
I don't like the idea of having to lock my cars at night. That pisses me off more than them taking the $5

I like the stinky pinky but only up to the first knuckle, I do not want a GD thumb up there--I've told her multiple times and I always catch her when she tries to pull a fast one---it's my butthole for Chrissakes I'm gonna know--so cut out the BS.

Isn't locking cars eaier than putting in a surveillance system? Or isn't it cheaper to just let yourself get robbed?

BTW, last night I lost my ipad I've had for 3 years, don't ask me how. Anyway, I thought for sure it would be cheap to get another one since there have been umpteen versions since and I don't need alot of GB or extras. Pretty much just surf, check email and occssionally look at documents on my office's system. But, it still costs $400? Where do I get a new ipad 1 for cheap?

I don't lock my car doors either. So far I've not been burgled. The idea of having to lock my car or even the doors to the house irks me. We've got 6 dogs, though, so I'm not really worried about anybody sneaking into the house. They practically attack me when I come home, I'd hate to see what they did to an intruder...

Re: MIT Engineers
They don't make the original ones anymore, so you would either have to find really old inventory or buy refurbished. The cheapest new one is the iPad mini without the high res display.sardis wrote:BTW, last night I lost my ipad I've had for 3 years, don't ask me how. I think our amazon.com overlords sell refurbished you may be able to get a first generation ipad for $150 or so.
Sure, I could have stayed in the past. I could have even been king. But in my own way, I am king.

Re: MIT Engineers
There are also cheaper tablets if you don't care about having Apple. Sounds like that might be the way to go for you if you really just do internet, email, and office documents.

well no, I already have the stuff I mentioned. And to me, the price of being able to live in a neighborhood where you don't have to lock your cars is more valuable than the effort involved. If I can send a friendly message to the kids, then the issue goes away.
If it were meth addicts ripping out my stereo, I'd handle it differently but its just some local kids who have too much time on their hands and wanted some change to go down to the corner market.

I don't know alot about tablets, but if you go droid route , there are basically two types, the cheap alpha cortex processor tablets that have 512mb memory built in and are running 4gb or 8gb, and then the more expensive dual or quad core tablets - often by a reliable brand name like Sony or Samsung that are going to have at least 1gb local memory and 8gb or 16gb storage.
I own 4 of them , 2 of both types. The $79 7" tablets are basically tablets that were designed to be e-readers and they put the google app store on them, added a cheap camera and are trying to pass them off as serviceable tablets. You get what you pay for, because the processor can't handle the average workload. Forget about trying to watch streaming video. For basic functionality however, if the wireless is working they are OK.
However I love our Sony and Motorola tablets that have the multi core processors in them. They are ever bit as solid in quality and performance as an iPad, and more importantly are memory upgradable. I have 64gb in the motorola now with a total investment of less than $250.

Re: MIT Engineers
How much and where did you get the game camera?
Sure, I've been called a xenophobe, but the truth is, I'm not. I honestly just feel that America is the best country and the other countries aren't as good. That used to be called patriotism.

I was walking thru Bass Pro Shops last year just before Xmas. This was a 3mp camera with a flash - no IR for $49. Its called EZ-Cam
The best deal I can find on them now is this
http://www.basspro.com/Wildgame-Innovat ... 303271440/
I sat it up last year to take pictures of deer who bedded down in my grapevines, but it ended up taking like 117 pictures of my Xmas flag flapping in the wind, so I got pissed and turned it off.

Re: MIT Engineers
that SD card with the wifi built in is the shizz though. I think its called eye-fi
Also, if you want a camera locally, I'd consider buying a static IP wireless camera for like $49 off ebay or Amazon - they are motion sensor, have infra red and can wirelessly transmit (or hard wired) directly to the internet or to your mobile phone.

Re: MIT Engineers
Let's reopen the Mac vs. PC debate. I hear all these people talk about how much better Mac's are, but (as eCat would say) ever time I use one I can't see any difference at all. Everybody who likes Mac's always say it's more "intuitive". What the fuck does that even mean? I just click on a browser, type in a porn site and then fast forward. How much more fucking intuitive can it get?? Then the Mac folks say they never crash. I don't remember any PC I've had ever crashing, whatever that means. Yes, I've had to restart the computer sometimes, but then it's right back working properly. So what's the deal?

Re: MIT Engineers
from your standpoint I think the biggest issue is probably the degrading of performance over time for the Windows based machine due to malware and the like. You constantly have to stay vigilant with the machine dealing with viruses (or not and just put up with the crap).
If you were the type that was using adobe photoshop, or editing music or things like that then we'd probably have a more in depth discussion.
For me, you can buy a perfectly good laptop for $300 that will burn DVDs and music, surf the net, whatever and there is no way to justify the additional cost of an Apple machine. I got my son a 17" Gateway for $299 and will add 4gb of memory to it to give him a total of 8GB that will add another $80 to the price

Re: MIT Engineers
I would like to stick with apple because I have an iphone and my music is loaded up through itunes and they connect. I know there is probably a way to transfer it all, but I am too lazy and impatient to go through that process.
There are refurbished ipads on Amazon, but they all have scratches and dings. I am leary of that. Do they still sell new ipad 2's?

iTunes sucks in windows, and I'm sure that is by design.
