Hedge, also, Bama has better basketball support than most imagine. We are usually top 25 or so in attendance. I know we outdrew UCLA, Michigan, and several others of note last year.
The support is there. The team hasn't been, though.

Yeah, I suspect its fun for fans of a football school to get behind the hoops team. I doubt they really agonize when the team loses, but I believe they genuinely enjoy seeing them win. The MIF's youngest daughter was a senior at South Carolina last year, we went down there to watch the FF, the place was nuts. Kids were genuinely excited, but I have to say, when they lost to Oregon, everybody just kept on drinking and partying. If it had been Carolina, the mood in Chapel Hill would've been much darker. Granted, USC isn't on the same level with Bama or several other SEC schools in terms of football success, but they are undoubtedly a football school first, like every other SEC school save (maybe) Vandy...
On another note, this first day of hoops has been remarkable chalky (I don't count a 9 beating an 8 as an upset at all). Loyola beat Miami, but it seemed like everybody was calling that one (even I picked that one, along with, I suspect, the majority of players). So technically that was an mild upset, but not particularly a shocking one. Buffalo buffaloing Zona was a shock and a legit upset, even in light of Zona's looong history of early round flame out's as a much higher seed, but that's it for today in terms of legitimate upsets (and, like I said, it was the way Buffalo manhandled Zona that was more shocking than that they won). Kinda surprising given the supposed parity in college hoops this year, or at the very least, the lack of clearly superior teams...

In fairness, there were some close games that weren't decided until the closing moments, but most of those weren't terribly dramatic, just kinda close until the end with the higher seed winning without having to resort to a last second miracle, i.e, Houston and (kinda) UK and Texas Tech. Loyola needed a last second 3 pointer, but that was an upset. Gonzaga survived a scare and needed a 3 pointer in the final minute to take the lead, but UNC-G had plenty of time to respond and Gonzaga ended up winning by 4, so that was a close call but far from a buzzer beater...

Forgot San Diego St. had a decent look at a 3 with 1.1 seconds left, but it didn't go in. Houston's layup for the win on the previous play was dramatic, but if it hadn't gone in it would've gone to OT, so the game didn't hinge on it. Still, all in all, not the level of fireworks and upsets that you usually get on day one of the tourny. Maybe they're going to double up tomorrow. Hopefully Lipscomb doesn't get that memo...

I watched the Zona game but I was in bed. I wasn't about to get up and post on it.

I picked Va Tech only because of a conscious decision to avoid picking heavily on the SEC. I also picked Providence, it's hardly a slight to Alabama to pick Va Tech anyway.

Don't take this away from me. Don't you dare. Admit that you picked Alabama out of hatred, contempt, and genuine mirth at their basketball incompetence. ADMIT IT!

I did. I thought Bama is a clown program that would wilt under the hot light of facing an ACC team that had beaten an elite program like UNC. I didn't give it a second thought.

The Cats finished the day 0-6 from three, marking the first time in 1047 games they failed to hit a shot from beyond the arc.

goddammit Cal
Isn't it a little excessive to get hot and bothered over a meaningless stat like that? I guess if you made 1 of those shots everything would have been hunky dory.
