McCain knew his days were numbered when he decided to go out with an anti-Trump bang. He has a lot in common with the man though.

On the other hand, he did oppose torture for some reason so he got that right.

maybe because he couldn't raise his arms above his head?

There is no debate that what McCain did during the Vietnam war was exceptional and heroic. I"m surprised they haven't made a movie about it.

When he came back he turned into a jackass, dumping his wife because she got fat, marrying into wealth, going after Barry Goldwater as a carpet bagging Senator and then his infamous stint on the Keating Five.

He hated the Tea Party but then selects an idiot as his V.P. who led the charge to turn the Tea Party from this libertarian led mindset to the Marco Rubio audition hour.

And finally the "Maverick" ends his career priding himself on reaching across the aisle and regretting not choosing a liberal V.P., turning on the first true outsider president since the 1950's. I can't say I blame him for disliking Trump as president, but attacking him during the campaign pretty much summed up everything that was wrong about McCain and his vision for America. He was a bitter man for losing the presidency twice only to see a lesser man who had a better version of being a maverick win.

you want an eye opener about the difference between cops and the public they serve

Read this story about a female state trooper that pulled over an off duty policeman driving 120mph going to his second job.

then read the comments below. Holy hell, these guys think they are untouchable. Its an older story but the comments make it noteworthy

McCain was basically another George W Bush. A mediocre branch of an illustrious family tree that yanked him into all the right spots to be, and make sure he became somebody, even when he was a screw up. I don’t really know or remember much about him in his prime, but he’s often seemed more like a useful idiot than a maverick.

That describes many if not most politicians, certainly when you get the level of the US congress or cabinet...

Jimmy Carter will be a similar yin yang case when he goes. Carter was a pretty bad president, but he is a truly admirable human being, and by far the best ex-president we ever had.

I wonder what % of the population remembers or was alive during John McCain's service in Vietnam?

The Millenials won't know anything about Carter's presidency or McCain's service in Vietnam unless they are incorporated into a video game.

McCain was controversial in the public eye right up to his death. People forget Carter is still alive.

McCain was indeed controversial. The GOP Establishment liked him enough to give him the POTUS nomination. I don’t they cared (or ever care) that much whether their guy wins or not. I think they still like him because he was at war with Trump, as are they. Trumpians hate McCain because he was 100% Establishment, and he hated Trump. Democrats hated McCain because he was a Republican, which ipso facto made him a racist sexist bigoted homophobe. At least until they noticed that McCain hated Trump, and died in that state of grace. Then, they decided McCain was a great statesman.

It’s kinda complicated.

What about the % that remember how he supported bombing a million or so Vietnamese civilians into the next plane of existence after he got back. Can you imagine if Iran had better weapons and decided to bomb us into the stone age because they saw our style of gov't as a possible threat in the future?
