My neighborhood is next to Haymount....The Haymont sign (those Greeks mispelled it...) is about 1/2 mile from my house.

^So true. Yes, I still miss the days when those words actually had meaning.
DS, did they ever catch Bobby Hill?

If Trump picks Amy Coney Barrett as his SCOTUS nominee, I fully expect Schumer’s first question at her confirmation hearing to be, “Are you now, or have you ever been, a member of a dangerous, subversive, or un-American organization, like the Roman Catholic Church?”
Also, here is one of the thousands of cases of citizens using firearms in life and death self-defense, which Cletus says don’t really happen:

He believes in applying the Constitution as written, not making stuff up according to your personal, utopian feelings.
I guess that disqualifies him in your opinion. Problem for you is, despite your esteemed and erudite opinion about him, he will be seated with SCOTUS their next term. And he will stay there for decades, right next to Gorsuch.
MAGA.

He said the he coached his daughters' basketball teams and all the girls refer to him as Coach K. That might not be his fault, but it still makes him unfit to serve...

I thought you were a UNC grad. As such, I figured that a legal nerd being called “Coach K” would be somewhat demeaning to the coach of your school’s rival, and would therefore please you.

You're overthinking it, which is something I'm sure you hear very rarely. At any rate, this guy seems alright. Sure, he's right wing, but doesn't appear to be as right wing as Scalia or Thomas, or, for that matter, Alito or Gorsuch. Unless there's some skeleton in the closet, and you've got to figure that there probably isn't, he should breeze thru...

There is a long history of supposedly conservative Justices appointed by supposedly conservative Republican presidents who join SCOTUS and lurch leftward. (Funny, the opposite never happens to Democrats and their liberal appointees, but I digress...) Kavanaugh could easily join that tradition. We may be about to trade in Kennedy for another Kennedy. Take heart.

I'm not sure what Kavanaugh will do about Roe V. Wade. My gut instinct is he's not going to touch it
but he's definitely going to strike down alot of these gun restrictions that overstep the framework of the 2A. Now whether the other justices will go along with his more hardcore view is questionable.

Only Fox News "conservatives", duly instructed and agitated by Hannity & Co., would regard a few votes they didn't agree with as "lurching leftward". At any rate, conservatives have always had at least few stalwarts that could be depended upon to never, ever buck the company line, except on the rare occasion when Thomas is so solidly on the ideological right that he actually votes with the so-called liberal bloc, as he did in some case about homegrown marijuana about a decade ago. But it's interesting (or something) that you consider anybody not unerringly in the Scalia/Thomas camp as a potential closet leftist...

I think most of the conservative justices realize that if they overturned Roe that it would cause such a political upheaval and diminution of their brand that they would never do it. They'll likely chip away at some of the details, like allowing states to place stricter limits on what is considered late term or something like that, but they'd never outright overturn it. The political backlash would be a tsunami...

I heard an interesting counter argument to Roe V. Wade and that is the total outlawing of abortion in general and the flipside of that being the government forcing a woman to have a child.
Of course the counter argument is no one told the woman to have unprotected sex but that really isn't relevant - what outlawing abortion does is lay the groundwork for government intervention to force child bearing on the population and when put into those terms is very communistic. I'm not even sure that's the right word but this idea of having a child for the benefit of the country seems outlandish to me.

Out of the Federalist's list of two dozen candidates, Kavanaugh stood alone with his opinions that a prez shouldn't be investigated or indicted.
That's all you need to know.
