It seemed to be a big advantage in getting money out of the general soup of scholarship money from like the school district, rotary clubs, charities, etc that gave out money, and often all of them included an essay or interview that was your opportunity to spin your sob story. In Houston, there is an organization that runs a program where they give out Jones Scholarships, named after a prominent Houston financier and philanthropist. Back then it was I think, $4000 per year, and they gave it out to 4 kids in every high school and they considered financial need. The ones who got it were basically THE top 4 students in our class in order who had divorced parents, and the same thing seemed to play out repeatedly for other ones as well.

Congrats. Just like the recruiting title, UK has once again won the "Las Vegas August odds to win it all" title, just like every other year. But hey, at least you have one real title to show for Calipari's decade in Lexington...

Calm down Hedge... Recruiting battles are one thing but keep in mind Calipari's a C- bench coach. Can't see Cal ever winning another title at Kentucky. My best guess is unc will repeat next season.

Marvin Bagley to Dook... Looks as if Calipari didn't win the recruiting title this year. Would have been his only championship this season.

The challenge of saying you are a selective school and then bringing in a kid that couldn't qualify just to play and will be a one and done

Bagley already is regarded as a Top 3 NBA draft pick — next year! Technically a high school senior, he’s hoping the NCAA will grant him “re-classification” status so he can play this season at Duke then enter the draft.

And he’ll arrive at Duke having played for three high schools in two states, Arizona and California.

Still, given that it’s Duke, we’re supposed to regard Bagley as a legitimate, Duke-qualified full-scholarship student-athlete who meets with coach Mike Krzyzewski’s heralded high standards — at least as heard on TV, especially CBS and ESPN.

Imagine what those desensitized, TV-celebrated “Cameron Crazies” would do to Bagley if he played at Duke for UNC, North Carolina St. or Kentucky. They’d mob-trash him as a one-and-done rent-a-star.
