Yeah, the valley is pretty much sprawl and you're right about the many multiples, but if you go west of the valley, there are mountains and redwoods galore. And of course west of that is the ocean. Skyline Drive, which runs along the ridge of the Santa Cruz range, is one of my favorite roads to drive, views of the Bay to the east and the ocean to the west. Most non-tech folks tend to move north, but the whole peninsula between SF and San Jose (outside the valley corridor) is some pretty beautiful country...

in the early 90's I would travel to San Jose and Pasadena quite a bit for work.

I really enjoyed San Jose.

Pasadena was cool too. I was hanging out at JPL long before Big Bang made it nerdy cool

What I did not like was Chula Vista.

Shithole

UNC landed Cam Johnson a few days ago much to Pittsburgh's chagrin.

This is ridiculous and stupid advice.
Sardis, I've been overruled. Cletus says I was wrong. The near West and South sides of Chicago are great - especially for visitors. So now I suggest you take in all that the near West and Southsides have to offer.

For the near westside, start by taking a refreshing walk through Garfield Park and enjoy a play at the campus theatre of Malcolm X college right next to the United Center.

For the Southside, take a liesurely stroll west of the University of Chicago. Woodlawn and Washington Park are lovely this time of year. Then you can amble South along the Dan Ryan expressway, and explore the delightful villages of Gresham, Auburn and Calumet. Conclude your relaxing day with a short drive East to Gary IN, for some great shopping and the fine arts. Cletus says you'll be just fine.

Never thought we'd get him, as Pitt is sticking to their guns about not letting him play for a year if he goes to any ACC team. We could certainly use him next year, he'd fit right in Justin Jackson's role...

I was thinking if Bradley came back, we'd have a great shot at making another championship run. I don't think he's going to set the NBA on fire next year, but he would've been dominant in college next year. Anyway, if we can get Cam eligible, we still should be pretty good...

Leave it to you to distill down two large parts of an already large city to a few small neighborhoods, a couple of which are just fine. This is what happens when you give advice about a place you don't know particularly well and are a moron.

results of U of L Audit

UofL’s IT department erased and repurposed Dr. Ramsey’s hard drive before the audit.

I’m sure it’s purely coincidence that UofL’s IT department bleached Ramsey’s computer clean right before the firm stepped in to conduct the audit.

“Nothing to hide here, just one big ol’ coincidence that we destroyed the hard drive as you came to investigate it. Unfortunate timing I guess.” – UofL Foundation, probably [Source]

Tom Jurich’s son was paid almost $800K by the foundation.

Mark Jurich, the son of Tom Jurich, received $791,000 in compensation from the UofL foundation.

Fun fact: Mark Jurich did not work for the foundation.

The audit says UofL’s payroll processing listed him in the Department of the President, but the university’s staff directory lists him as Senior Associate Athletic Director for Development since 2008. [Source]

The foundation paid $300,000 for a radio show. And it wasn’t even a good one.

As we expected (and knew all along), the UofL foundation funded its own propaganda on the radio with a $300K/year deal for a show and advertising. Of course that show is was Captain Suntan’s show and it was created to counter KSR. Good job, good effort. [Source]

Kathleen Smith, Ramsey’s former aide, wasn’t afraid to play dirty.

Smith’s name is found all throughout the audit’s findings and she seems like a gangster. For example, she once asked, “How can we move our LLCs into something more obscure that would be difficult to find?” [Source]

The foundation spent more than $800,000 of its endowment on season football and basketball tickets.

Holy cow those must’ve been good seats. I hope the Office of the President really enjoyed wasting all those donations on tickets to see the Cards. [Source]

Oh wait… It turns out they then sold those tickets:

But to who? And where did the money go?

No one knows.

The foundation invested $9.9 million in high-risk startup companies.

Those companies are currently valued at less than $2 million. [Source]

The spending is really insane.

The foundation used some of its endowment to buy a golf course.

ULF bought the Simpsonville golf course for the UofL Athletics Association. [Source]
