Tom Osborne likely wouldn't be terrible, but even he likely wouldn’t be able to compete at the level he did under the current recruiting landscape at Nebraska.
Nebraska leveraged a lot of extra talent based on recruiting the most talented non-qualifiers across the country, and then making sure that in the year they had to sit out, they got the 2.0 they needed to be eligible.
Nebraska has some advantages, but its also got some pretty sever disadvantages as well that have to be overcome. Its not a natural sleeping giant type program IMO.

Fans and an administration that actually care about winning football games is a significant advantage over some places

Agreed. But at the moment, they are not leveraging that advantage. A loss to lowly Illinois is evidence of that fact.

Lincoln was an epicenter of the Big8/XII but it became an outlier with the move to the BigTen, far from the Ohio-Michigan axis. There's no magnetism to the place anymore to attact top notch players.

After winning in Lincoln, Illinois followed that up by losing at home to Texas-San Antonio, 37-30, and then getting housed on the road at Virginia, 42-14.

Mike Gundy on Big-XII expansion and Nebraska
Mike Gundy wrote:I thought when Nebraska went North they lost recruiting down here. I thought it hurt them. Its just my opinion.
His comments on BYU, Cincinnati, and Central Florida, were very intelligent, very mathematical.

heh
Mike Gundy said when you guys left the Big-XII your recruiting went to shit and the team suffered. That is why you are just "average" now, no longer a powerhouse.
