so I just heard it explained on the news. I wasn't too far off but basically if you go in with $10, Kasich wants the $10 taxed. If you win $1000 and walk out, then the $10 is still all that is taxed, but if you win $1000 AND proceed to lose it back to the casino, then the Casino is taxed for $1010.

Not sure how they'd even track that.

I'm thinking Kasich believes that now Casinos are in the state, he can f them over any way he wants to get revenue and no one will complain. The Casino's aren't going to pull out after this hard fought battle.

It doesn't make sense. I paid taxes on the $10 when I earned it.

I could make an html tag that just shows any html in a box or whatever. In theory its a "security risk" or something. Also you get the possibilty that someone like Lunafreak starts embedding crap that breaks the board until its deleted.

Hmmmmm...

"Wednesday night the AP obtained documents that show a gambling consultant suggested Ohio raise the taxes and fees. That consultant has to deal with Governor Kasich's administration to receive a percentage of the revenue it helps generate for the state.

not to defend the guy especially since I didn't vote for him but I can see where he is coming from.

Casino's are a guilty sin, and here you have maybe 35% of the state against them anyways. Its like raising taxes on cigarettes and alcohol. There isn't going to be enough people to stand up and raise hell about it to stop it.

So Kasich sees 4 new Casino's coming online and without doing the books just assumes that they are going to be cash cows and will be easy to tax because no one is going to give a shit about the government taking money away from Casino's who take money away from the working citizens. Look at how people are treating the oil companies right now in light of their massive profits.

The consultant getting a cut of the action ..I've never heard of that in state government before but whatever. Just shows that Kasich is too stupid to come up with a plan of his own, but has to fill the state coffers one way or another.

I bet he fights back by using the tried and true - if we don't collect this tax money then I'm going to have to cut schools and medical assistance. I don't think its going to be too hard for him to cast a bad light on the Casino's in this situation and if them threatening not to build or halt construction is just a PR ploy.

Every tax code I've seen dealing with gambling also allows you to write off your losses

if you win a grand and lose it within the same day noit sure why you couldnt write that off.

KC is also building a new casinp right next to the kansas city sppedway across the street from the new soccer stadium which is wirte nexxt to the tbones minor league baseball stadium which is next to an outdoor shopping complex all dotted with about 40 resteraunts

west side of Kansas city int 70 and 435

casino opens this fall

I can't even get my mind around taxing gambling gains but not allowing for losses. If you "win" $1000 and then end up losing it all during your visit (which is how it usually works, if not worse), then you didn't "win" jack shit. But even beyond that utterly absurd scenario, I still can't comprehend how anyone could propose taxing real winnings that you actually walk out of the casino with but not allowing a deduction for real loses. That's just mob style extortion. Ironic that the state would now be proposing mob style extortion against people who are patronizing an industry so closely associated with the "real" mob. But in this case, the state is the real mob...

well hold on here - Kasich isn't proposing that you or I as gambling patrons would be taxed - we are already taxed as we would be required to pay taxes on any additional winnings we walk out of the casino with. Try winning say $2500 at a casino (at one time, not cumulatively ) and walking out without filling out a tax form - they won't give you the money before you do.

What Kasich is saying is that we could have walked out with that $1000 dollars as a gambling patron and paid taxes on it, however since we handed it back to the Casino then *they* have to pay taxes on it as income - nevermind that it was their money to begin with, ownership of the money changed hands and because they run an establishment that is geared to entice us to put that money back into the Casino, its highly unlikely that we would walk out with that $1000 and pay the taxes on it to the state. So the state is just trying to work the angle that the money changed ownership, and before the state could get their cut on taxing the winnings, we proceeded to spend it back at the Casino which becomes a net zero for both parties (minus the money we spent and Casino got prior to winning the $1000)

I'm not saying its right ...I'm just trying to describe how the state sees it.
